Tigers Split With USciences to Open 2015 Season

Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University softball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader at the University of the Sciences to open the new season on Wednesday afternoon at McNeil Field.  The Tigers dropped game one by the score of 20-11, but bounced back to win game two, 7-3.

Holy Family starts its season at 1-1 in conference play, while USciences is now 3-7 overall and 1-1 in begin CACC action.

Freshman Alyssa Cudeyro (Sicklerville, N.J./Washington Twp.) led the Holy Family offense going 5-for-8 on the afternoon in her collegiate debut.  She drove in five runs and recorded a triple and a double.  Freshman Koreen Orozco (Whittier, Calif./St. Paul) also had a successful debut as she finished the afternoon 5-for-7 with three RBI.  In addition, Orozco picked up her first collegiate victory in the pitching circle with a complete game performance in game two.  She struck out four batters and allowed three runs, all unearned, in seven innings.

Game One: USciences 20, Holy Family 11

The opener provided plenty of offense as both teams combined for 31 runs and 28 hits.  Trailing 6-2 entering the third inning the Tigers exploded for an eight run third.  Holy Family produced eight runs off eight hits and took advantage of a Devils' error in the inning.

Junior Kristine Casey (Newark, Del./Caravel) and freshman Jennifer Trapp (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County) recorded back-to-back run scoring extra base hits after junior Brianna Scotto (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) reach on an error.  Sophomore Bailey Walters (Ridgecrest, Calif./Burroughs) also recorded a run scoring double, while Cudeyro highlighted the inning with a two-run single.

When it was all said and done, Casey capped the scoring with her second hit in the inning, a single to left field scoring Scotto to make the score 10-6.

Holy Family tacked on another run in the fourth inning after USciences responded with two runs in the third.  Orozco singled up the middle to score Walters as the Tigers increased their lead to 11-8.

However, USciences came through with 12 runs in its half of the fourth inning to take a commanding 20-11 lead.  The Devils recorded five two-run hits in the inning.  Sophomore Barbie Barron drove in a game-high five runs for the Devils as she finished the afternoon 1-for-2.  Senior Devon DeBellis finished 1-for-3 at the plate and drove in four runs.  Both players walked twice and scored two times.

Sophomore Nicole Ayers picked up the victory after pitching 2.2 innings of relief. Ayers is now 2-1 on the year after allowing one earned run.

Game Two: Holy Family 7, USciences 3

In game two, the Tigers' offense scored seven unanswered runs to give Orozco plenty of offensive support in her first collegiate start.  Orozco (1-0) went the full seven innings as she allowed three runs, all unearned in the seventh inning, to go along with four strikeouts and four hits.

In the second inning, Orozco helped her own cause driving in the game's first run with a two-out infield hit scoring Casey who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning.

Leading 1-0 entering the fourth inning, the offense supplied Orozco with four more runs as the Tigers took advantage of two early errors by the Devils.  Cudeyro highlighted the inning with a two-run single, while Scotto capped the scoring with a run scoring single later on in the inning.

Holy Family added two more runs in the seventh inning when Walters connected on her first home run of the season resulting in two runs.  Walters' blast gave the Tigers a 7-0 lead.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Devils capitalized off two errors by the Tigers scoring three runs.  However, Holy Family managed to escape the inning with no further damage and came away with the four-run victory.
