Tigers Win Conference Opener at Wilmington, 15-8



Newark, Del. - Senior Brianna Lancetta (Marlton, N.J./Bishop Eustace) scored a season-high five goals as the Holy Family University women's lacrosse team defeated Wilmington University by the score of 15-8 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on Tuesday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex. 
 
Holy Family improves to 2-2 overall and opens conference play with a 1-0 mark.  Wilmington is now 1-5 overall and 0-1 in CACC action.
 
Lancetta, along with junior Paige Settar (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional), combined for nine goals to lead the Tigers' offense.  Lancetta, who scored a season-high five goals, also recorded an assist to finish the afternoon with six points.  Settar also tallied an assist to go along with two ground balls and three draw controls.
 
Senior Sarah Kelly (Washington Twp., N.J./Washington Twp.) finished with a game-high seven ground balls and seven draw controls.  Senior Christina Bonomo (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) and junior Nicole Braungart (Medford, N.J./Bishop Eustace) each scored a pair of goals in the victory.
 
For Wilmington, junior Sara LeBrun led the team with four goals, while senior Megan Keffer added three scores.  Keffer also recorded two ground balls and controlled a team-high five draws.  Senior Rebekah McCurry produced four points on three assists and a goal.  She also picked up four ground balls and caused a game-high three turnovers.
 
Ahead 7-6 early in the second half, Holy Family scored six unanswered goals to pull away from Wilmington.  Lancetta and Settar scored five of the team's six goals during a 12-minute span.  Settar jump-started the surge with a goal at the 24:20 mark, before Lancetta capped the run with three straight scores to make the score 13-6 with 12:29 remaining in the half. 
 
Junior Erin Harmer (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) also added a goal in the team's rally.
 
Wilmington added two scores down the stretch but it wasn't enough to pull close to the Tigers' lead.  Junior goalkeeper Grace Deckert (Jarrettsville, Md./Fallston) made seven saves after facing 22 shots by the Wildcats.  Deckert limited Wilmington to only three goals in the second half.
 
Holy Family held the edge in shots (34-22), ground balls (25-22) and draws (15-10).  The Tigers were also a near perfect 15-of-18 on clears. 
 
Holy Family led 6-5 at the half after both team's exchange a pair of scores five times throughout the half.  Wilmington capped the scoring with a goal in the final minute of the first half to cut the Tigers' lead to one entering halftime.
 
Holy Family returns to action on Thursday, March 19 as the Tigers host Bloomsburg University in a non-conference contest.  Game time is slated for 4 p.m. at Tiger Field.
