Tigers Roll Past Caldwell, 85-76



Caldwell, N.J. - Juniors Marvin Crawford (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) and Isaiah Gans (Philadelphia, Pa./Redemption Christian Academy) each scored a game-high 19 points as the Holy Family University men's basketball team defeated Caldwell University by the score of 85-76 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on Saturday afternoon at the George R. Newman Center.
 
Holy Family improves to 17-6 overall and 11-3 in the CACC, while Caldwell University falls to 11-11 overall and 7-7 in conference action. 

Crawford shot 6-of-11 from the field on his way to 19 points tying his season-high.  He also grabbed seven rebounds, dished out three assists and blocked three shots.  Gans went 8-of-12 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from deep range to record his 19 points.  He also grabbed six rebounds and blocked one shot.
 
Redshirt junior Reggie Charles (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) (4-7 FG) finished with 17 points and dished out a game-high seven assists, while redshirt junior Eric Fleming (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) added 12 points after draining a game-high four three-pointers (4-7 3FG).  Junior Turhan Griffin (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Learning Center) also scored in double-figures totaling ten points to go along with four assists and two steals.
 
For Caldwell, juniors Dawan Lighty and Billy McDonald each led the offense with 18 points apiece.  In addition, Lighty (3-5 FG) was a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line, while McDonald added six rebounds.  Junior Salvatore Vitello recorded 12 points off the bench for the Cougars.
 
Holy Family trailed 11-9 by the 15:21 mark of the first and followed with an 18-5 surge of the next seven minutes to take the game's first double-digit lead.  Griffin converted a three-point play after knocking down a free throw to make the score 27-16 with 8:19 to go in the half.
 
Caldwell responded and cut the lead down to two points (29-27) following an 11-2 run, but the Tigers quickly countered and went on a 12-3 run of their own the final four-plus minutes of the half.  Gans capped the scoring with a three-pointer in the final minute to give the Tigers a 41-30 lead at halftime.
 
Holy Family shot 53.6-percent from the field in the first half and knocked down seven three-pointers to help produce its lead.  The Tigers finished the game knocking down 27-of-51 from the field and 12-of-29 from deep range.  They also converted 19-of-24 from the free throw line.
 
The Tigers increased their lead to as many as 13 points on the opening possession of the second half and went on to maintain the lead the rest of the way. 
 
Caldwell cut the lead down to five points on more than one occasion in the half with the later coming at the 1:13 mark after a jumper by McDonald made the score 79-74.  However, the Tigers managed to hold off the Caldwell offense in the final minute to secure the victory.
 
Holy Family is back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 10 as the Tigers host Georgian Court University in a CACC contest.  Game time is slated for 8 p.m. at the Campus Center Gymnasium.
