Balanced Attack Leads Tigers Past Goldey-Beacom, 74-63

Wilmington, Del. - The Holy Family University men's basketball team had three players score a team-high 14 points as the Tigers went on to defeat Goldey-Beacom College by the score of 74-63 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) South Division contest on Wednesday night at the Joseph West Jones Center.

The victory pushes the Tigers to 16-6 overall and 10-3 in the CACC, while Goldey-Beacom falls to 8-14 overall and 5-9 in conference action.

Redshirt juniors Reggie Charles (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) and Eric Fleming (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) along with junior Isaiah Gans (Philadelphia, Pa./Redemption Christian Academy) all scored 14 points for the Tigers to help pace the offense.  Charles added seven rebounds and a game-high six assists, while Fleming totaled double-figures in back-to-back games for the first time since the 2012-13 season.

Gans added eight rebounds to go along with his 14 points as he has scored in double-figures for the sixth straight game.  He also blocked three shots to increase his conference lead to 44 blocks this season.

Also for the Tigers, junior Marvin Crawford (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) filled the box score with nine points, eight rebounds and five assists, while fellow junior Derrick Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti), the CACC Defensive Player of the Week, added five points and eight rebounds.  Junior Hunter Wysocki (Howell, N.J./Colts Neck) contributed 12 points (4-6 FG) off the bench for the Tigers.

For Goldey-Beacom, senior Kyle Steinbergin led all scorers with 18 points, while fellow seniors Chris Gebhart and Joey Getz each totaled 15 points.  Gebhart also grabbed eight rebounds, while Getz corralled nine boards and dished out five assists.

The Tigers trailed early on in this match up and were down by as many as seven points midway through the half.  A layup score by Getz gave Goldey-Beacom an 18-11 advantage at the 10:22 mark.

However, the Tigers responded with a 9-2 run thanks to three three-pointers by Gans to tie the game at 20-20.  Holy Family grabbed the lead minutes later when Wysocki knocked down a three-pointer of his own to make the score 23-20 at the 6:35 mark.  Wysocki hit another three-pointer less than a minute later to cap a 15-4 surge.

Holy Family maintained the lead the rest of the half and held a 35-34 advantage entering halftime.

In the second half, the Tigers opened with six straight points to take their biggest lead up to that point after another three-pointer by Gans made the score 41-34.

As the half progressed, the Tigers maintained the lead despite the Lightning coming within two points on multiple occasions.  A three-pointer by Steinbergin made the score 49-47 at the 12:40 mark, but that would be the last time the Lightning came within one possession of the lead the rest of the game.

Holy Family went on to outscore Goldey-Beacom, 21-11, over the next nine-plus minutes to lead by as many as 12 points.  Fleming, who knocked down a three-pointer while being fouled, converted the free throw to make the score 70-58.

As a team, the Tigers drained 14 three-pointers (14-36) on the night making seven in each half.  It marked the 13th time this season that Holy Family recorded double-figures in made three-pointers.

Holy Family is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 7 as the Tigers travel to face Caldwell University in a CACC contest.  Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
