Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tigers Hold Off Nyack, 79-69

Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University men's basketball team recorded its 20th win of the season after defeating visiting Nyack College by the score of 79-69 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on Saturday afternoon at the Campus Center Gymnasium.

Holy Family improves to 20-7 overall and 14-4 in the CACC, while Nyack falls to 7-18 overall and 6-12 in conference action.  With the win, the Tigers maintain their position as the third seed in next weekend's CACC Tournament.  Holy Family currently trails Philadelphia University (14-3) by one game in the loss column for second place in the South Division.  The Tigers still have a chance of moving up in the standings with one regular season game remaining on their schedule.  The Rams have two games left on their season.

Redshirt junior Reggie Charles (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) led the Tigers with 17 points  (5-9 FG/6-6 FT) to go along with five assists, while junior Marvin Crawford (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) finished with 13 points (4-8 FG), six rebounds and five assists.  Juniors Isaiah Gans (Philadelphia, Pa./Redemption Christian Academy) and Derrick Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) also scored in double-figures.  Gans finished with 11 points and six rebounds, while Stewart totaled ten points and a game-high 13 rebounds to record his second double-double of the season.

Also for the Tigers, redshirt junior Eric Fleming (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) and junior Turhan Griffin (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Learning Center) each finished with nine points apiece, while junior Hunter Wysocki (Howell, N.J./Colts Neck) finished with six points, eight rebounds and three steals.

For Nyack, sophomore Yahmore Greenlee led the Warriors with 17 pints and five rebounds, while redshirt sophomore Will Robinson recorded a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.  Senior Chris Hampton added 15 points and seven rebounds.

Holy Family led nearly the entire game with the exception of the 1-0 deficit at the 18-33 mark of the first half.  After Nyack split a pair of free throws, the Tigers responded with an 8-0 run to lead 8-1 by the 15:58 mark of the half.

The Tigers increased their lead to as many as 18 points in the half after Fleming knocked down a three-pointer to make the score 33-15 with 1:42 to play until halftime.  The team went on to lead 33-18 at the half.

Nyack nearly overcame the 15-point halftime deficit as the Warriors opened the second half with a 22-5 run capped by a three-pointer by Hampton that made the score 40-38 at the 13:43 mark.  However, the Tigers quickly increased their lead back to double-digits with an 8-0 run capped by a Crawford layup.

Holy Family once again swelled its lead back to 18 points later in the half.  A three-pointer by Crawford with 5:18 to play in regulation gave the Tigers a 67-49 lead.

However, the Warriors continued to crawl back and responded with an 11-2 run to cut the lead back to single digits.  With 2:42 remaining, a three-pointer by Greenlee made the score 69-60.  Despite the late rally that would be as close as the Warriors would come of the Tigers' lead down the stretch.

Holy Family is back in action Tuesday, Feb. 24 as the Tigers travel to face Chestnut Hill College in the final regular season contest of the 2014-15 season.  Game time is slated for 8 p.m.

NOTES: The 20 wins thus far marks the second straight 20-win season for Holy Family.  Last year, the Tigers finished 21-10 tying the 2007-08 team with the most victories in the program's NCAA Era.  Furthermore, this is the team's first back-to-back 20-win season since joining the NCAA Division II in 2003-04 and third overall.
