Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tigers Edged by Cross-Town Rival Philadelphia, 72-71

Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University men's basketball team dropped a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) South Division contest to cross-town rival Philadelphia University by the score of 72-71 on Thursday night at the Gallagher Center.

Holy Family is now 18-7 overall and 12-4 in the CACC, while Philadelphia improves to 17-6 overall and 11-3 in conference action.  With three conference games remaining in the regular season, the Tigers are currently third in the South Division.  Philadelphia currently sits in second place with five conference games remaining on its schedule.

Junior Marvin Crawford (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) once again led the Tigers' offense in scoring for the third time in as many games as he finished with 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field.  Crawford also recorded five rebounds and three assists.

Junior Isaiah Gans (Philadelphia, Pa./Redemption Christian Academy) and redshirt junior Reggie Charles (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) each finished with 17 points apiece.  Gans (6-13 FG) also had four rebounds and blocked two shots, while Charles (6-10 FG) finished with two assists and a steal.  Junior Hunter Wysocki (Howell, N.J./Colts Neck) added ten points on 4-of-9 shooting.

For Philadelphia, senior Nick Schlitzer led all scorers with 21 points to go along with seven rebounds, while juniors Peter Alexis and Derek Johnson each finished with 18 points.  Alexis also totaled a game-high 11 rebounds to record a double-double, while Johnson added seven boards and two assists.

Holy Family trailed 71-70 with :35 seconds left in regulation when Charles was fouled and sent to the free throw line.  Charles, who's shooting 82.3-percent from the free throw line this season, connected on both attempts to tie the game and give the Tigers a 72-71 lead.

On the ensuing Philadelphia possession, Gans came through with a block on a shot attempt by junior Andre Gibbs, but Schlitzer grabbed the offensive board and was fouled in the process.

With four seconds left on the clock, Schlitzer made the first of two attempts but missed the second as Gans grabbed the defensive board.  The Tigers quickly called a time out to set up a play to possibly win the game in the final seconds.

However, on the ensuing possession the Tigers were unable to get a shot off as time expired with the Rams ahead, 72-71.

Holy Family finished the game with ten three-pointers as the Tigers have made double-figure threes for the fifth straight game.  The Tigers rank 13th in Division II with 10.0 three-pointers made per game.

Holy Family led the entire first half and held a nine-point advantage early on in the half when Crawford converted a pair of free throws to give the Tigers a 13-4 lead at the 15:34 mark.  The Tigers took a 32-29 lead heading into the locker rooms at halftime after Philadelphia closed out the half on a 5-0 run in the final minute of the half.

Holy Family is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 14 as the Tigers host Concordia College in a CACC contest.  Game time is slated for 3 p.m. at the Campus Center Gymnasium.
