Tigers Battle Past Cross-Town Rival Philadelphia, 61-54



Philadelphia, Pa. - Redshirt senior Reggie Charles (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) led all scorers with a season-high 30 points as the Holy Family University men's basketball team defeated nationally ranked and cross-town rival Philadelphia, 61-54, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on Thursday night inside the Campus Center Gymnasium.

How We Got Here
Holy Family overcame a nine-point deficit in the first half and gained control of the game in the second half.  The Tigers grabbed the lead after trailing 27-25 at halftime when redshirt senior Eric Fleming (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) opened the second half with a three-pointer on the Tigers' first possession.  Fleming, who finished with eight points, gave the Tigers their first lead since the 15:39 mark of the first half.
 
Holy Family led majority of the second half except for a short moment when Philadelphia took a two-point advantage after sophomore Kaison Randolph converted a pair of free throws at the 9:19 mark.  Randolph's two free throws gave the Rams a 41-39 lead.
 
However, on the following Holy Family possession senior Isaiah Gans (Philadelphia, Pa./Redemption Christian Academy) drained a three-pointer to make the score 42-41 in favor of the Tigers.  Gans totaled nine points on the night to go along with eight rebounds and four blocks.
 
From there, the Tigers maintained the lead the rest of the way to record their second victory in as many games against a nationally ranked team.  Holy Family converted 9-of-10 from the free throw line in the final 3:41 minutes of the game and converted 14-of-19 in the second half.
 
Inside the Box Score
Holy Family: Charles was the focal point of the Holy Family offense tonight.  He shot 8-of-15 from the field and was on target from the free throw line converting 13-of-15 attempts…. Senior Marvin Crawford (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) was the only other Tigers player to score in double-figures with 11 points… Crawford also grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists.
 
Philadelphia: Senior Peter Alexis nearly came away with a double-double as he finished the game with 19 points and nine rebounds…. Sophomore Eric Long grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds while scoring eight points…. The Rams controlled the boards holding a 47-29 advantage on the glass.
 
National Attention
For the second time in as many games Holy Family took down a nationally ranked opponent.  The Tigers defeated No. 2 Southern Connecticut State University (90-70) on Monday and now No. 25 Philadelphia.
 
Turnovers? What Turnovers Holy Family committed a season-low three turnovers, while its defense forced 15 Philadelphia miscues.  The three turnovers marked the lowest committed in a game by the Tigers since only committing four back on Jan. 15, 2014 versus Post University.
 
Next Up
Holy Family doesn't return to action until Saturday, Nov. 19 when they travel to New England to face Assumption College and the College of Saint Rose in the annual East Region Challenge hosted by the Greyhounds in Worcester, Mass.
