Tigers Win Home Opener Versus Bentley, 77-61

Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University men's basketball came away with a 77-61 victory over visiting Bentley University in a non-conference contest on Saturday afternoon at the Campus Center Gymnasium in the team's home opener.

After five straight games to start the season on the road, the Tigers enjoyed some home cooking inside the Campus Center to improve to 4-2 overall this season.  Bentley meanwhile falls to 4-2 thus far this year after the loss.

Redshirt senior Reggie Charles (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) led five players that scored in double-figures for the Tigers with a game-high 20 points.  Charles also paced the offense with a game-high eight assists to go along with three steals on defense.  Senior Derrick Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) continued racking up double-doubles as he recorded his third straight and fourth this season with an 11-point/14-rebound performance.  Stewart also finished with five assists.

Senior Isaiah Gans (Philadelphia, Pa./Redemption Christian Academy), who is in striking distance of becoming the 25th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points, finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.  Gans currently has 976 career points and is 24 shy of the milestone.

Other double-digit scorers for the Tigers include redshirt senior Eric Fleming (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) and senior Marvin Crawford (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens).  Fleming finished with a season-high 12 points after knocking down 4-of-6 from deep range, while Crawford added 11 points with six rebounds and five assists.

For Bentley, senior Tyler McFarland led the Falcons with 15 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists.  Freshman Ryan Richmond also scored in double-digits as he provided the team with 13 points off the bench.  Richmond also grabbed eight rebounds.

Holy Family led from beginning to end as the Tigers' defense limited Bentley, a team that has averaged 89.6 points per game the first five of the season, to only 61 points in the game.  The Falcons shot under 40-percent from the field for just the second time this season (38.2) and tied their season-high with 17 turnovers.

Holy Family quickly mounted a double-digit lead within the first five minutes of action.  A layup basket by Charles capped a 12-2 run to start the game.  The Tigers would go on to lead by as many as 15 points in the half when Charles scored another layup to make the score 24-9 midway through the half.

Bentley cut the lead down to single digits when junior Chris Murray hit a three-pointer with 3:02 to play in the half.  The Tigers quickly responded by scoring on back-to-back possessions to bring their advantage back to double-figures.  Holy Family went on to lead 37-24 at halftime after Fleming capped the scoring with a three-pointer.

In the second half, the Tigers opened with a 7-0 run to increase their lead to 20 points. Holy Family maintained its double-digit advantage the rest of the game and went on to lead by as many as 28 points at the 2:34 mark.  Redshirt senior Xavier Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./Saul) scored a layup to make the score 76-48.

Holy Family shot a season-best 40.7-percent (11-27) from beyond the arc and shot 43.7-percent from the field, its second-best performance of the young season.

Holy Family is back in action on Wednesday, Dec. 2 as the Tigers host Goldey-Beacom College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest.  Game time is slated for 8 p.m.
