Tigers Drop Non-Conference Contest to Merrimack, 89-74



Manchester, N.H. - Seniors Isaiah Gans (Philadelphia, Pa./Redemption Christian Academy) and Derrick Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) each recorded double-doubles but it wasn't enough as the Holy Family University men's basketball team dropped a non-conference contest to Merrimack College, 89-74, on Sunday afternoon inside the Southern New Hampshire University Fieldhouse.
 
Holy Family is now 3-2 overall, while Merrimack improves to 3-2 with the victory.
 
Gans led the Tigers with 19 points after draining six three-pointers (6-13) on the afternoon.  He also totaled 12 boards to record his second double-double of the season.  Stewart finished the game with 10 points and 14 rebounds to record his second double-double in as many games and third of the season.  Through five games thus far, Stewart is averaging a double-double per game with 12.8 points and 11.2 rebounds.
 
Redshirt senior Reggie Charles (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) finished the game with 17 points and five rebounds, while senior Marvin Crawford (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) totaled double-figures as well with 12 points.  Crawford also dished out a team-high four assists.
 
For Merrimack, senior Gelvis Solano led the Warriors with a game-high 14 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field.  He also grabbed nine rebounds and recorded a game-high six assists.  Fellow senior Troy Hammel finished with 22 as he converted 12-of-14 from the free throw line.  Hammel also totaled seven rebounds. 
 
Holy Family led majority of the first half before Merrimack grabbed hold of the lead after back-to-back three pointers on two straight possessions from Solano.  The two three's gave the Warriors a 27-22 advantage at the 8:11 mark.
 
Later in the half, the Tigers tied the game at 29-29 when Charles knocked down a three-pointer with 4:40 remaining in the first half.  Merrimack would respond two possessions later with another three from Solano, which would give the Warriors the lead for the rest of the first half.
 
In the second half, Holy Family would tie the game on two occasions but was unable to get over the hump.  A pair of free throws by redshirt senior Eric Fleming (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) tied the game at 40-40 at the 17:04 mark, however on the ensuing possession, Merrimack responded with yet another three from Solano. 
 
Solano's triple jump-started a mini 7-0 run for the Warriors resulting in a 47-40 advantage.  Later in the half, Merrimack increased its lead to double-digits for the first time when Hammel hit a three-pointer to make the score 66-55 midway through the half.
 
Merrimack would lead by as many as 17 points by the 5:12 mark after a three-pointer by Strickland made the score 82-65.  The Warriors knocked down nine three-pointers (9-25) for the game and took advantage of their free throw attempts by converting 30-of-40 from the line.
 
Holy Family is back in action on Saturday, Nov. 28 as the Tigers host Bentley University in the team's first home game of the season.  Game time is slated for 2 p.m. at the Campus Center Gymnasium.
