Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tigers Fall Short at Southern N.H., 74-69

Manchester, N.H. - The Holy Family University men's basketball team dropped its first game of the season after falling to Southern New Hampshire by the score of 74-69 in a non-conference contest on Saturday afternoon at the SNHU Fieldhouse.

Holy Family is now 3-1 overall this season, while Southern New Hampshire improves to 3-1 overall.

Senior Marvin Crawford (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) led the Holy Family offense with a game-high 17 points off the bench.  Crawford shot 7-of-12 from the field and also totaled six rebounds and two assists.  Redshirt senior Reggie Charles (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) finished with 15 points, four assists and three steals, while senior Isaiah Gans (Philadelphia, Pa./Redemption Christian Academy) added 14 points, five boards and two blocks.

Senior Derrick Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) recorded his second double-double of the season with a 10-point/11-rebound performance.  Stewart connected on 5-of-8 from the field and led the team in boards.  Senior Hunter Wysocki (Howell, N.J./Colts Neck) also scored in double-figures with 11 points in a reserve role.

For Southern New Hampshire, Devin Gilligan recorded a double-double as he led the Penmen with 17 points and 12 rebounds.  Chris Walters nearly posted a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Daquaise Andrews added 14 points and five rebounds.  Rodney Sanders also scored in double-figures after producing 13 points and six rebounds.

The Southern New Hampshire offense shot nearly 50-percent from the field and knocked down 10-of-22 from deep range and in return its defense limited the Tigers' to 38.6-percent shooting for the game, including just 6-of-31 from beyond the arc. As a result, the Penmen led most of the game with the exception of the opening minute.  Southern New Hampshire mounted a number of double-digit leads, but the Tigers responded each time cutting the deficit to single digits.  However, Southern New Hampshire answered back never allowing Holy Family to take control of the lead.

Holy Family trailed by 10 points, the last double-digit deficit of the game, early in the second half when the Penmen led 47-37 at the 17:06 mark.  The Tigers were able to knock the lead down to one possession thanks to a 9-1 run over the next three minutes.  A layup basket by Gans made the score 48-46.

From there, the Tigers maintained distance with the Penmen trailing only by single digits.  In fact, Holy Family came within one point of the lead on three occasions late in the half.

Southern New Hampshire led 70-67 with :36 seconds left to play in regulation.  Adrian Oliveira was sent to the free throw line after a Holy Family foul and could have given the Penmen a two possession lead.  However, Oliveira missed the first free throw of a one-and-one before Crawford grabbed a key defensive board for the Tigers.  Crawford went coast-to-coast scoring a layup to cut the lead down to one point, 70-69, with :22 seconds showing.

After a quick Holy Family foul, the Penmen converted a pair of free throws to increase the lead to 72-69.  With less than :20 seconds to play, Charles attempted a three-pointer which would have tied the game but the shot came up short as Andrews grabbed the rebound for the Penmen.

The Tigers quickly fouled sending Andrews to the free throw line.  Andrews went on to miss both attempts giving the Tigers another chance to tie the game.  On the following possession, Holy Family managed another three-pointer, this time by Crawford, but his shot fell short but he was able to grab the offensive board and in the process was fouled.

Crawford missed the first free throw attempt of a one-and-one and the ball was rebounded by Gilligan, forcing Holy Family to foul.  Chris Walters converted a pair of free throws with two seconds left to play to seal the victory for the Penmen.

Southern New Hampshire finished the game converting 20-of-27 from the free throw line.

Holy Family returns to action tomorrow as the Tigers face Merrimack College in a non-conference contest beginning at 3 p.m. at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
