Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tigers Hold Off Daemen With 89-86 Victory

Amherst, N.Y. - Senior Derrick Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) was named tournament Most Valuable Player as he recorded a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds in the Holy Family University men's basketball victory over Daemen College on Saturday evening on the final day of the East Coast Conference/Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) inside Lumsden Gymnasium.

Holy Family starts its season at 2-0, while Daemen is now 1-1 after its season opening tournament.

Stewart recorded his first double-double of the season after shooting 8-of-13 from the field for 17 points and grabbing a hold of 14 rebounds.  He also dished out four assists and blocked four shots on defense as he was named the MVP of the tournament.  Senior Isaiah Gans (Philadelphia, Pa./Redemption Christian Academy) was named to the All-Tournament team after a 16-point/nine-rebound performance before fouling out of the game.

Redshirt senior Reggie Charles (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) led the team with 20 points to go along with seven rebounds and six assists.  Senior Marvin Crawford (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) also scored in double-figures with 14 points, five rebounds and four assists.  Senior Hunter Wysocki (Howell, N.J./Colts Neck) shot 3-of-4 from the field and produced nine points on the night.

For Daemen, three players scored 20-plus points and shot over 50.0-percent from the field.  Arif Mehmetaj led the game with 24 points (9-16 FG) and 17 rebounds, while Supreme Hannah totaled 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field.  Torrence Dyck finished with 23 points as well after shooting 7-of-14 from the field, including 4-of-7 from three-point range.

It was a close-tight game most of the way as Holy Family led majority of the game. The Tigers led by nine points late in the game when redshirt senior Xavier Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./Saul) scored a fast-break layup at the 8:03 mark in the second half to give the Tigers a 77-68 advantage.

Daemen responded with back-to-back three-pointers to cut the lead to three points (77-74) before Holy Family went on a 10-1 run to produce the game's first double-digit lead.  Gans knocked down a three-pointer to give the Tigers an 87-75 advantage with 3:02 to play in regulation.  Gans' three was the team's 11th of the game as the Tigers recorded double-digit three-pointers in back-to-back games.

Despite the double-figure deficit, Daemen came soaring back and over the next 2:47 went on an 11-1 run to make the score 88-86.  A pair of free throws by Dyck capped the run with :16 seconds remaining in regulation.

After a quick foul by Daemen, Charles was sent to the free throw line for two shots.  After missing the first one, Charles sank the second to give the Tigers an 89-86 lead.  Daemen followed with a timeout setting up potential game-tying play.

Out of the timeout, Hannah managed to get off a three-point shot to tie the back but he was off the mark as time expired and the Tigers came away with the one possession victory.

The Holy Family defense forced 15 turnovers and went to capitalize off the Daemen miscues with 17 points.  The Tigers themselves only turned the ball over six times.

Holy Family will now turn its attention to conference play as the Tigers travel to face Georgian Court University in the CACC opener on Wednesday, Nov. 18.  Game time is slated for 8 p.m. in Lakewood, N.J.
