Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tigers Open Season With 79-61 Win Over Roberts Wesleyan

Amherst, N.Y. - The Holy Family University men's basketball team had four players score in double-figures as the Tigers opened the 2015-16 season with a 79-61 victory over Roberts Wesleyan College in a non-conference contest on day one of the East Coast Conference/Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (ECC/CACC) Challenge hosted by Daemen College on Friday night inside Lumsden Gymnasium.

Senior Isaiah Gans (Philadelphia, Pa./Redemption Christian Academy) led the Tigers with 17 points, while senior Derrick Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) nearly recorded a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds.  Senior Marvin Crawford (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) and redshirt senior Xavier Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./Saul) both came through with double-figures off the bench.

Crawford recorded a double-double with a team-best 10 rebounds to go along with 14 points.  Williams finished with 13 points and tied for the team lead with six assists.  Senior Reggie Charles (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) also dished out six assists with four points and three steals.

For Roberts Wesleyan (0-1), Tyrel Dixon finished with a team-high 16 points while grabbing six boards and dishing out a pair of assists.  Mike Stone added nine points and four rebounds, while Davon Jackson produced eight points and totaled six rebounds.

Holy Family opened the game on a 9-0 run and in typical Tigers' fashion all nine points came via the three-point shot.  As a team the Tigers drained 13 three-pointers, including nine in the first half (9-22) to help swell their lead to as high as 21 points.  Williams knocked down a three-pointer at the 8:55 mark to make the score 27-6. Holy Family would go on to lead, 38-23, at the half.

In the second half it was more of the same from the Tigers' offense.  Holy Family increased its lead to as many as 24 points early in the half.  Another three-pointer, this time by senior Hunter Wysocki (Howell, N.J./Colts Neck), gave the Tigers a 49-25 lead at the 16:07 mark. Wysocki finished the game with seven points and four rebounds.

The Tigers maintained their double-digit lead the entire half and pushed it back to 24 points in the final four minutes when Williams scored a layup to make the score, 76-52.

The Holy Family defense limited Roberts Wesleyan to 33.9-percent shooting from the field and just 29.2-percent from deep range (7-24).  The Tigers also forced 14 turnovers in the game.

Holy Family (1-0) will face Daemen Saturday on day two of the ECC/CACC Challenge.  Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m.
