Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Tigers and Golden Lions End in 2-2 Draw

Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University men's soccer team overcame a pair of deficits to finish in a 2-2 draw with visiting Dowling College in a non-conference contest on Monday afternoon at Tiger Field.

With the tie Holy Family is now 2-10-1 overall, while Dowling now has a record of 3-6-1.

Senior goalkeeper Richard Ongaro (Columbus, N.J./Notre Dame/VCU) pushed away nine saves, one shy of his season-high, after facing 20 shots by the Dowling offense to keep the Tigers in the game.

Dowling jumped on the scoreboard first with an early goal in the fourth minute of action.  Mike Gronenthal tallied his second goal of the season when he knocked a rebounded ball into the back of the net.  Sean Collins made the initial shot in which Ongaro knocked down to make the save, but Gronenthal was in the right spot to get the second chance shot.

The score remained that way through the rest of the half and through half time until both teams combined for three goals in a span of less than three minutes.  The Tigers knocked in their first goal to tie the score at 1-1 when junior Justin Hiltwine (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) connected on his first goal of the season.  After missing a penalty kick, Hiltwine collected the rebounded ball and found the back of the net for the score.

A little over a minute later Dowling grabbed the lead right back when Nyder Chardonette scored his second goal of the season after knocking in a shot attempt by Bobby Cranor.  Chardonette's goal gave the Golden Lions a 2-1 lead in the 52nd minute.

The lead would be short lived as the Tigers came soaring right back and tied the game in the 53rd minute when junior Christopher Tracey (Abington, Pa./Abington) connected on a shot for his team-leading fourth goal of the season.  Tracey received a pass from sophomore Mariano Cepeda (Philadelphia, Pa. (Argentina)/Roman Catholic) inside the box to finish the play.

The score remained tied 2-2 as time expired in the second half forcing overtime.  In the first extra frame, freshman Matthew Tracey (Abington, Pa./Abington) launched a shot dead on goal but Dowling goalkeeper Chris Friedl made the save to preserve the tie. Friedl finished the game with three saves.

M. Tracey's shot was the only shot on target in overtime by either team as the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

Holy Family is back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 14 as the Tigers host Bloomsburg University in a non-conference contest.  Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m. at Tiger Field.
