Tigers Outlast Bloomfield in Overtime, 80-75



Philadelphia, Pa. - Redshirt junior Eric Fleming (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) and junior Marvin Crawford (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) knocked down two key three-pointers in the final 1:25 of regulation to send the game into overtime as the Holy Family University men's basketball team went on to defeat visiting Bloomfield College by the score of 80-75 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on Saturday afternoon at the Campus Center Gymnasium.
 
Holy Family improves to 15-6 overall and 9-3 in the CACC, while Bloomfield is now 7-11 overall and 6-5 in conference action.
 
Fleming led four players to score in double-figures for the Tigers as he finished with a season-high 17 points after knocking down a season-high five three-pointers (5-9).  Crawford totaled 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field, while junior Isaiah Gans (Philadelphia, Pa./Redemption Christian Academy) recorded his third straight double-double.  Gans totaled 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds to register his sixth double-double of the season.
 
Junior Turhan Griffin (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Learning Center) came off the bench and provided the Tigers with 11 points (4-8 FG) as well as five assists, while junior Hunter Wysocki (Howell, N.J./Colts Neck) added seven points and three rebounds.  Redshirt junior Reggie Charles (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) filled the box score with eight points, five boards and a game-high six assists.  Junior Derrick Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) had a career day on defense with five blocked shots and three steals.  He also scored five points and tallied seven rebounds.
 
For Bloomfield, senior Marvin Williams finished with a game-high 19 points to go along with eight rebounds and five assists.  Freshman Ignacio Diez recorded a double-double with 17 points and ten rebounds.  Freshman Nick Davidson contributed 14 points and eight rebounds.
 
The Tigers found themselves trailing by five points with less than two minutes to play in regulation after junior Claude Blue gave Bloomfield a 63-58 lead with a layup basket.  On the ensuing possession, the Tigers cut the lead to three points when Charles scored a layup of his own. 
 
Holy Family forced a turnover on the next Bloomfield possession resulting in Fleming knocking down a three-pointer to tie the game at 63-63 with 1:25 left to play in the half. 
 
Bloomfield grabbed the lead back and increased back to three points after Williams split a pair of free throws to make the score 66-63 with :42 seconds showing on the clock.  Two possessions later, Crawford came through with a clutch three-point shot to tie the game at 66-66 with :19 seconds to go in regulation.
 
The Bears held for the final shot to possibly win the game, however a jumper by Williams fell short forcing overtime.
 
In the overtime period, the Tigers opened with a 5-0 run capped off by another three-pointer by Fleming to make the score 71-66.  Holy Family led by as many as six points (74-68) in overtime after Stewart split a pair of free throws with less than two minutes to play.
 
Bloomfield rallied and came within one point of the Tigers' lead after Diez converted a pair of free throws making the score 74-73 with 1:12 to play.  However, that would be as close as the Bears would get as the Tigers outscored Bloomfield, 6-2 in the final minute of overtime.
 
Holy Family held the biggest lead of the game late in the first half when Griffin knocked down a three-pointer to make the score 31-20 at the 3:16 mark.  Bloomfield followed with a 10-4 run to close out the half cutting the Tigers' halftime lead to 35-30.
 
Both teams shot similar from the field during the course of the game with the Tigers shooting 41.4-percent from the field and the Bears connecting on 43.3-percent of their shots.
 
The Holy Family defense forced 21 turnovers and went on to score 18 points off Bloomfield miscues.
 
Holy Family is back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 4 as the Tigers travel to face Goldey-Beacom College in a CACC contest.  Game time is slated for 8 p.m.
