Tigers Handle Wilmington With Ease, 88-63



Newark, Del. - Redshirt junior Reggie Charles (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) and junior Isaiah Gans (Philadelphia, Pa./Redemption Christian Academy) combined for 45 of the team's 88 points as the Holy Family University men's basketball team defeated Wilmington University by the score of 88-63 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on Thursday night at the WU Athletics Complex.
 
Holy Family, winners of four of its last five games, improves to 14-5 overall and 8-2 in the CACC. Wilmington is now 4-15 overall and 3-7 in conference action.
 
Gans led all scorers with 25 points as he knocked down half his shots from the field (7-14) and converted a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line.  He also grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds to record his fourth double-double of the season.  In addition, Gans blocked three shots on the defensive side of the ball.
 
Charles finished with 20 points to go along with four rebounds and a game-high five assists.  He converted 9-of-12 from the free throw line on his way to his 18th straight game scoring in double-digits.  Junior Derrick Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) shot 7-of-10 from the field to finish with 17 points, while grabbing seven rebounds. 
 
Junior Marvin Crawford (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) added nine points and seven rebounds to go along with a season-high five steals. 
 
For Wilmington, senior Kevin Ohen led the Wildcats with 15 points to go along with six rebounds, while sophomore Tyaire Ponzo-Meek finished with 12 points and nine boards.  Junior Sam Sanders and senior Tyrik Gass scored in double-figures as well adding 12 and ten points respectively.
 
Holy Family opened the game on a 9-0 run and never looked back.  The Tigers had their first double-digit lead by the midway point of the half after a Stewart layup made the score 17-7.  Holy Family would go on to lead by as many as 18 points in the half, leading 36-18 at halftime.
 
The Holy Family defense forced 12 turnovers in the first half and capitalized off the Wilmington miscues by outscoring the Wildcats, 15-0, off turnovers.  For the game, the Tigers forced 20 turnovers while committing only nine of their own.
 
In the second half, Wilmington sparked a 14-0 run to open the half as the Wildcats came within six points of the Tigers' lead.  A layup by Gass made the score 38-32 at the 15:43 mark. 
 
However, Holy Family responded quickly and turned a six points lead into a 16-point advantage over the next three-plus minutes.  The Tigers used a 14-4 run to increase their lead to 52-36 after Stewart capped the run with a layup.
 
Holy Family maintained its double-digit lead the rest of the way and led by as many as 25 points after junior James McDonnell (Swansea, Mass./Bridgton Academy) capped the scoring with a pair of free throws in the final seconds to solidify the 88-63 final score.
 
In the second half, the Holy Family offense shot 50.0-percent from the field (15-30) and converted 19-of-23 from the free throw line.  The Tigers finished the game converting 25-of-32 free throw attempts.
 
Holy Family is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 24 as the Tigers travel to face Post University in a CACC contest. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
