Tigers Edged by USciences in Overtime, 72-67



Philadelphia, Pa. - The University of the Sciences outscored the Holy Family University men's basketball team 11-6 in overtime to pick up a 72-67 victory in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) South Division match up on Tuesday night at the Campus Center Gymnasium.
 
Holy Family is now 12-5 overall and 6-2 in the CACC, while USciences improves to 13-4 overall and 7-2 in conference action. 
 
Redshirt junior Reggie Charles (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) scored a team-high 22 points to lead the Holy Family offense.  He shot 6-of-13 from the field and was 8-of-11 from the free throw line.  Charles also dished out six assists and recorded three steals on the defensive side.
 
Junior Marvin Crawford (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) shot 5-of-8 from the field to finish with 13 points, while junior Isaiah Gans (Philadelphia, Pa./Redemption Christian Academy) added 11 points and a team-best 11 boards for his third double-double of the season.  Gans also blocked four shots and had a pair of steals on defense.  Junior Derrick Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) contributed eight points and six rebounds to go along with two blocks.
 
For USciences, senior Garret Kerr recorded his 15th double-double of the season after scoring 17 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.  Junior Sho Da-Silva contributed 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting off the bench.  He also recorded eight rebounds. Juniors T-John Casiello and Dylan Kerwin each finished with 12 and 10 points respectively.  Casiello also dished out a team-high five assists.  
 
Both teams went back and forth in the first half with the lead changing hands eight different times as well as the game being tied five times in the half.  USciences managed to produce a two-point halftime lead despite the Tigers scoring six of the final eight points of the half, including a three-pointer by Crawford at the buzzer.  Crawford's three-point basket decreased the Devils' halftime advantage to 34-32.
 
The Devils would maintain their lead throughout the second half.  USciences led by as many as seven points late in the half when Casiello drained a three-pointer to make the score 55-48 with 6:51 to play.
 
Over the next five minutes, Holy Family outscored the Devils 10-2 to take its first lead of the game since the 9:13 mark of the first half.  Junior Turhan Griffin (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Learning Center) split a pair of free throws to give the Tigers a 58-57 lead with 2:00 minutes to play in regulation.
 
On the Tigers next possession, Charles knocked down a three-pointer to increase the lead to 61-57 at the 1:17 mark.  However, Sho Da-Silva cut the lead in half on the Devils' ensuing possession with a layup.  Sho Da-Silva then tied the game after junior Wes Kerr forced a steal on the Tigers' following possession. 
 
With the game tied 61-61, the Tigers had one final possession to win the game in regulation with eight seconds to play but were unable to manage a shot in the final seconds as the game moved into overtime.
 
Late in the overtime period, Holy Family tied the game after Stewart connected on a pair of free throws to make the score 65-65 with 1:43 showing on the clock.  Junior Wes Kerr though followed with a three-pointer to give USciences a 68-65 lead on its following possession. 
 
From that point, the Devils limited the Tigers to just one shot the final 1:26 of the game as Holy Family scored only two points during that stretch via the free throw line.  USciences converted 4-of-4 from the line in the final seconds to hold on to the victory.
 
Holy Family is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 17 as the Tigers host Chestnut Hill College in a CACC contest.  Game time is slated for 3 p.m. at the Campus Center Gymnasium.
