BOX SCOREPhiladelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University women's soccer team came away on the losing end of a 2-0 shutout against cross-town rival Philadelphia University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on Thursday afternoon at Tiger Field.
Holy Family begins the season at 0-1-0, while Philadelphia starts at 1-0-0 after the victory.
After nearly a scoreless first half, junior Patrice Maro broke a 0-0 tie in the 39
th minute with her first score of the season converting on a shot inside the box. Freshman Natasha Vadas assisted on the play.
Philadelphia would go on to double its lead early in the second half when sophomore Shannon Reardigan scored in the 52
nd minute off a pass from senior Hannah Palese.
Trailing 2-0, Holy Family nearly got on the board but a shot by sophomore
Ashley Shackleford (Burlington, N.J./Holy Cross HS) hit off the post in the 58
th minute. However, junior
Lisa Abramski (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) quickly controlled the loose ball but a save by Philadelphia junior goalkeeper Courtney Shaw held the Tigers at bay.
Later in the half, the Tigers were once again cursed by the goal, this time it was the crossbar keeping the Tigers off the board. In the 73
rd minute junior
Stephanie Fischer (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury)'s shot hit off the cross bar over the reach of Shaw.
Sophomore
Brittany Robinson (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) quickly gathered the rebounded ball, but Shaw recovered and made her seventh and final save of the game.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Sienna Smith (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Regional) made eight saves in net for the Tigers after facing 17 shots by the Rams.
Holy Family is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 6 as the Tigers travel to face New York Tech in a non-conference contest. Game time is slated for 12 p.m.
