Shannon Metzler (Erial, N.J./St. Josephs (Hammonton)) picked the right time to score her first career goal as the Holy Family University women's soccer team defeated Concordia College by the score of 2-1 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on Saturday afternoon at Holtdorf Soccer Field.
Holy Family improves to 2-2-0 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play, while Concordia falls to 0-2-1 overall and 0-2-0 in CACC action.
With the game tied 1-1 late in the second half, Metzler received a pass from sophomore
Brittany Robinson (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) at the top of the box. Metzler then launched a shot that found the back of the net towards the right side to break the deadlock score in the 78
th minute.
From that point on, the Tigers maintained the lead as the defense didn't allow a single shot by Concordia in the final 12 minutes of action. Holy Family outshot the Clippers, 38-5, setting a season-high on total shots. The Tigers also held a 4-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Sienna Smith (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Regional) made three saves in net for the Tigers.
Holy Family scored the game's first goal to open the scoring in the 33
rd minute when sophomore
Ashley Shackleford (Burlington, N.J./Holy Cross HS) scored her first goal of the season. Sophomore
Bianca Richardson (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Twp.) drove up the sideline and sent a cross pass into the box finding Shackleford for the score.
Concordia went on to tie the game at 1-1 in the opening minutes of the second half. Freshman Haley Horn scored her first career goal off a free kick from the right side.
Junior goalkeeper Samantha Street made 13 saves in net for the Clippers.
Holy Family is back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 16 as the Tigers travel to face Mercy College in a non-conference contest. Game time is slated for 4 p.m. in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.
