Tigers Take Care of Wilmington, 72-59



Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University men's basketball team remained undefeated in conference action after defeating visiting Wilmington University by the score of 72-59 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on New Year's Eve at the Campus Center Gymnasium.
 
Holy Family is now 10-3 overall and 5-0 in the CACC, while Wilmington falls to 3-10 overall and 3-4 in conference play.
 
Redshirt junior Reggie Charles (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) led all scorers with a game-high 24 points as he scored 21 of those points in the second half alone.  Charles shot 5-of-8 from the field and 10-of-11 in the second half to lead the Tigers' offense.  He finished the game 6-of-11 shooting to go along with three steals on defense.
 
Junior Marvin Crawford (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) also scored in double-figures for the Tigers as he finished the game with 15 points.  Crawford also recorded five rebounds and four assists.  Junior Derrick Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) added nine points and eight rebounds, while fellow classmate Isaiah Gans (Philadelphia, Pa./Redemption Christian Academy) totaled seven points and a game-high 12 rebounds.  He also blocked a pair of shots and had one steal.
 
For Wilmington, junior Shai Henry came off the bench and supplied the Wildcats with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting.  He also grabbed six boards.  Sophomore Tyaire Ponzo-Meek also recorded 14 points to go along with seven rebounds and four assists. Senior Valentino Thompson added ten points, four rebounds and three assists. 
 
Holy Family trailed 13-10 at the 12:40 mark of the first half but used a 19-6 run over the next seven minutes to lead by double-digits.  Junior Turhan Griffin (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Learning Center) capped the team's run with a fast-break layup to make the score 29-19. 
 
The Tigers would go on to take a 13-point advantage into the locker rooms at halftime thanks to a three-point basket by Stewart to close out the scoring in the half with a minute to play.  Stewart's three-pointer made the score 37-24.
 
In the second half, the Tigers maintained their lead the entire way despite Wilmington cutting the lead to four points on two occasions down the stretch.  The Wildcats came within two possessions after junior Ta'Vaune Griffin scored a layup to make the score 58-54 with five minutes to play.
 
However, the Tigers scored increased their lead back to double-digits over the next minute to keep the Wildcats at bay.  Charles split a pair of free throws to increase the lead to 64-54.
 
Holy Family 40.3-percent from the field and were 15-of-19 from the free throw line for the game.  The Tigers also drained seven three-pointers. 
 
Defensively, the Tigers limited Wilmington to 34.3-percent shooting on the day, including 3-of-11 from deep range.  The Wildcats also shot just 50.0-percent from the free throw line (10-20).
Holy Family is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 3 as the Tigers travel to face Felician College in a CACC contest.  Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m.
