Tigers Fall Short Versus Assumption, 64-62



Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University men's basketball team dropped a non-conference contest to Assumption College by the score of 64-62 on day one of the East Region Challenge hosted by Philadelphia University on Saturday afternoon at the Gallagher Athletic Center.
 
Holy Family is now 8-3 overall, while Assumption improves to 5-5 overall this season with the victory.
 
Junior Derrick Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) led Holy Family is a game-high and new season-high 19 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field.  Stewart also converted 9-of-12 attempts from the free throw line to go along with a team-high six rebounds.  Redshirt junior Reggie Charles (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) finished with 18 points on 5-of-11 shooting and 8-of-11 from the free throw line. 
 
Junior Marvin Crawford (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) also finished in double-figures as he totaled 11 points (4-7 FG), while juniors Turhan Griffin (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Learning Center) and Isaiah Gans (Philadelphia, Pa./Redemption Christian Academy) each added six points apiece. 
 
For Assumption, sophomore Kamali Bey recorded a team-high 15 points to go along with a game-high seven rebounds.  Juniors Terrance Bobb-Jones and Karl Ziegler each totaled 13 points.  Bobb-Jones also filled the box score six rebounds and five assists.  Sophomore Jack Sullivan also finished in double-figures with 11 points.
 
After a tight first half, Assumption gained control of the game late in the second half after taking the game's biggest lead when Bey scored a layup to make the score 55-48 with under five minutes to play in regulation.
 
Over the next three-plus minutes the Tigers began chipping away at the Greyhounds lead and eventually tied the game and grabbed the lead on a three-point play by Charles.  He capped the scoring with a free throw after connecting on a lay up while being fouled to make the score 60-59.
 
On the ensuing possession Assumption regained the lead on a layup by Bobb-Jones (61-60) with :47 seconds showing on the clock.  Holy Family quickly stole the lead back on its next possession when Charles converted a pair of free throws to make the score 62-61.
 
In the final :14 seconds of the game, Assumption converted 3-of-4 from the free throw line to lead by two points.  Bey converted both his attempts to give the Greyhounds a 63-62 lead at :14 seconds, and then split a pair of free throws with three seconds remaining to make the score 64-62.
 
After missing the first attempt, Bey knocked down the second allowing the Tigers one last chance to tie the game.  Holy Family threw an inbound pass to center court before Griffin received a pass outside the arc for a three-point attempt.  Griffin's shot went off before the buzzer but came up short as the Greyhounds came away with the two-point victory.
 
Holy Family is back in action tomorrow as the Tigers conclude the East Region Challenge with a non-conference contest with the College of Saint Rose.  Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
