Tigers Edged by No. 1 West Liberty, 89-86



West Liberty, W.Va. - Sophomore Devin Hoehn drained a three-pointer with five seconds left in regulation to break an 86-86 deadlock as West Liberty University defeated the Holy Family University men's basketball team by the score of 89-86 in a non-conference contest on Sunday afternoon at the Academic, Sports and Recreation Complex.
 
Holy Family is now 7-2 overall as the Tigers season-long seven game-winning streak came to an end.  West Liberty, ranked #1 in the recent NABC Division II Coaches' Poll, improves to 8-0 overall this season.
 
Holy Family had four players score in double-figures, including redshirt junior Reggie Charles (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) who finished with a season-high 26 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field.  He also converted 9-of-10 free throw attempts to go along with six assists.  Junior Isaiah Gans (Philadelphia, Pa./Redemption Christian Academy) scored 20-plus points for the third straight game as he finished the game with 21 points.  He also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
 
Junior Marvin Crawford (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) contributed 15 points (6-11 FG), while redshirt junior Xavier Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./Saul) added 15 points off the bench on 5-of-6 shooting. 
 
For West Liberty, senior CJ Hester and junior Seger Bonifant led the team with 21 points apiece.  Hester finished 8-of-12 from the field and grabbed a game-high ten rebounds to record a double-double.  Bonifant shot 7-of-14 and totaled three rebounds and three assists.
 
Trailing 59-47 at the 13:50 mark of the second half, Holy Family went on an 11-0 run over the next 1:38 minutes to come within one point of the Hilltoppers lead.  A three-pointer by Williams made the score 59-58.
 
West Liberty responded with an 9-2 run to lead 68-60 midway through the half, however the Tigers responded and rallied with a 9-0 run to take their first lead since the 16:58 mark of the first half when they led 8-7.
 
Holy Family went on to lead by as many as five points after Crawford drained a three-pointer with 6:40 to play in the half to make the score 75-70.  West Liberty eventually tied the game 75-75 on a jumper by Bonifant with five minutes showing on the clock. 
 
The Tigers grabbed the lead right back on the ensuing possession as junior Derrick Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) hit a jumper to make the score 77-75.  Stewart finished the game with four points and seven rebounds.
 
Holy Family maintained the lead entering the final minutes of the game, but a three-pointer by Bonifant with 1:27 to play gave the Hilltoppers an 83-82 advantage.  Charles gave the Tigers the lead right back on their following possession as he converted a pair of free throws to make the score 84-83. 
 
On the next West Liberty possession, Bonifant struck again with another three-pointer to make the score 86-84 with under a minute to play in regulation.  Charles once again came through for the Tigers as he hit a jumper to tie the game at 86-86 (:40) before Hoehn connected on the game-winning three-pointer for the Hilltoppers.
 
Holy Family connected on a season-high 16 three-pointers (16-29) as the Tigers shot a season-best 55.2-percent from deep range.  Holy Family shot 9-of-18 from three in the first half.  West Liberty shot just as well from three-point range shooting 13-of-29.
 
Holy Family returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 17 as the Tigers travel to face the University of the Sciences in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest.  Game time is slated for 8 p.m.
