Lucky 7: Tigers Defeat Bowie State for 7th Straight Win




Bowie, Md. - The Holy Family University men's basketball team opened the second half with an 18-3 run to propel themselves to a 79-68 victory over Bowie State University in a non-conference contest on Wednesday night at the A.C. Jordan Arena. 
 
Holy Family, winners of seven straight games, improves to 7-1 overall this season, while Bowie State is now 6-4 overall.  The win also marked the Tigers' first ever victory over Bowie State.  In the short all-time series, the Bulldogs are 2-1 versus Holy Family.
 
Redshirt junior Reggie Charles (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) led the Holy Family offense with a game-high and new season-high 23 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the field. Charles also dished out four assists. Junior Isaiah Gans (Philadelphia, Pa./Redemption Christian Academy) finished with 22 points (9-16 FG) scoring 20-plus points for the second straight game.  He also grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds to record his first double-double of the season.
 
Junior Marvin Crawford (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) tied his season-high with a 19-point performance, while junior Derrick Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) came away with a season-high 15 rebounds.  Stewart also tallied five points to go along with a season-high six assists.
 
For Bowie State, senior Cameron Knox led the Bulldogs with a team-high 21 points after shooting 8-of-16 from the field, including 5-of-10 from three-point range.  Knox also recorded nine rebounds.  Freshman Ahmaad Wilson came off the bench and contributed 13 points (6-11 FG).
 
Leading 32-27 at the half, the Holy Family offense opened the second half with a 16-3 to take a commanding 18-point lead.  Gans drained a three-pointer at the 15:12 mark to give the Tigers a 48-30 advantage.  The Tigers drained three three-pointers during the run by three different players, including Stewart and Crawford.
 
Holy Family maintained its double-digit lead the majority of the half with the exception of two occasions when Bowie State dropped the lead to single digits.  The later coming with 7:40 mark when junior Justin Beck completed a three-point play to make the score 58-49. 
 
Over the next five minutes, Holy Family went on a 16-7 run to extend its lead back to 18-points.  Charles knocked down a three-pointer and was fouled in the process.  He converted the free throw to give Holy Family a 74-56 lead.
 
The Holy Family offense shot 58.6-percent from the field (17-29) in the second half and knocked down 7-of-15 from deep range during its second half offensive surge.  The Tigers finished the game shooting 12-of-28 from three-point range.
 
The Tigers led by as many as 13 points in the first half leading 18-5 at the 12-minute mark.  Bowie State chipped away at the Tigers lead before cutting it to five points at halftime (32-27). 
 
Holy Family is back in action on Sunday, Dec. 14 as the Tigers travel to face nationally ranked No. 1 West Liberty University in a non-conference contest.  Game time is slated for 2 p.m.  The Hilltoppers advanced all the way to the NCAA Division II National Championship game last season.
