Tigers Overcome Penmen, 74-69



Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University men's basketball erased a 17-point deficit to rally past visiting Southern New Hampshire University by the score of 74-69 in a non-conference contest on Sunday afternoon at the Campus Center Gymnasium.
 
Holy Family, winners of four straight games, improves to 4-1 overall.  Southern New Hampshire is now 3-2 this season.
 
Senior Xavier Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./Saul) scored a season-high 22 points off the bench for the Tigers on 8-of-12 shooting from the field.  Williams drained 6-of-9 from three-point range to lead the team's three-point attack.  Junior Marvin Crawford (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) added 19 points (6-10 FG), while redshirt junior Reggie Charles (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) filled the stat sheet with 15 points, five rebounds and a game-high seven assists.
 
For Southern New Hampshire, BJ Cardarelli scored a team-high 17 points to go along with five rebounds.  Aleksandar Dobrovic finished with 13 points, while Rodney Sanders recorded ten points, eight rebounds and six assists.  Sanders also had a team-high three steals.
 
Williams scored 14 points in the second half to help lead the Tigers' second half surge.  Before that though, the Tigers overcame a 17-point first half deficit after trailing 30-13 at the 6:03 mark of the first half.  Holy Family went on a 21-10 run the final six minutes of the half to make the score 40-34 at halftime.  Charles drained a three-pointer to close out the half.
 
In the second half, the Tigers shot 7-of-16 from three-point range and 14-of-27 overall to overcome another double-digit deficit.  Holy Family trailed 52-36 at the 14:30 mark and as the half progressed eventual grabbed the lead from the Penmen.
 
Williams gave the Tigers their first lead since the opening moments of the game when he drained a three-pointer to make the score 65-64 with under three minutes to play in the half.
 
The lead would be short lived as the Penman regained advantage after Dobrovic converted a pair of free throws to make the score 66-65 with 2:24 left.
 
Junior Isaiah Gans (Philadelphia, Pa./Redemption Christian Academy) came through with a three to give the Tigers a 68-66 lead on the following possession, however Southern New Hampshire responded with a three by Phillip Tripodakis to make the score 69-68 with one minute to play in regulation.  Tripodakis finished the game with eight points.
 
On the ensuing possession, Williams gave the Tigers the lead once more with another three-pointer to give the Tigers a 71-69 lead.  Charles then grabbed a key defensive rebound after a missed three-pointer by the Penman.  Charles then found a wide open Williams down the court as he converted a fast-break layup to make the score 73-69 with only :16 seconds showing on the clock.
 
Gans split a pair of free throws in the final seconds and Crawford sealed the victory after intercepting an in-bounds pass by the Penman as the clock expired.
 
Holy Family is back in action on Wednesday, Dec. 3 as the Tigers host cross-town rival Philadelphia University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest.  Game time is slated for 8 p.m. at the Campus Center Gymnasium.
