Tigers Open CACC Slate With 84-70 Victory at Georgian Court



Lakewood, N.J. - Juniors Turhan Griffin (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Learning Center) and Reggie Charles (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) combined for 40 points as the Holy Family University men's basketball team defeated Georgian Court University by the score of 84-70 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on Tuesday night at the Wellness Center.
 
Holy Family, winners of three straight games, improves to 3-1 overall starts conference play with a 1-0 record.  Georgian Court is now 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the CACC.
 
Griffin scored a season-high 19 on 5-of-11 shooting from the three-point range.  He also converted 4-of-9 from the free throw line.  Griffin added a team-high seven rebounds to go along with three assists.  Charles totaled a season-high 21 points after shooting 4-of-7 from the field and 12-of-14 from the free throw line.  Charles dished out a team-high six assists.
 
Charles went to the line a game-high 14 times as Holy Family made a season-high 40 attempts from the charity stripe.  As a team, the Tigers converted 27-of-40 attempts. 
 
Junior Isaiah Gans (Philadelphia, Pa./Redemption Christian Academy) finished with 11 points and six rebounds, while junior Marvin Crawford (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) and senior Xavier Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./Saul) each added ten points each.
 
Holy Family trailed by as many as 14 points late in the first half.  The Tigers found themselves down 31-17 with 6:48 to play until halftime. 
 
Holy Family went on to close out the half with a 33-7 run during that span to take a 40-38 lead at halftime.  Charles converted a pair of free throws in the final seconds of the half to cap the scoring and come-back. 
 
In the second half, Holy Family opened with a 17-8 run to take its first double-digit lead of the game.  A layup basket by Crawford gave the Tigers a 57-46 lead at the 14:39 mark.  The Tigers would go on to lead by as many as 14 points with less than seven minutes to play when a basket by junior Hunter Wysocki (Howell, N.J./Colts Neck) made the score 73-59.  Wysocki (2-3FG) finished with five points and four rebounds.
 
For Georgian Court, freshman Juwuan Carter led the team with 19 points on 5-of-6 shooting.  Carter was a perfect 4-of-4 from deep range and finished the game with seven boards.  Freshman Michael Pierre finished with 12 points and five assists, while senior Jordan Wejnert added 11 points, four rebounds and five assists.
 
Holy Family is back in action on Sunday, Nov. 30 as the Tigers host Southern New Hampshire University in a non-conference contest.  Game time is slated for 3 p.m. at the Campus Center Gymnasium.
