Balanced Attack Lifts Tigers Past Daemen, 68-59

Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University men's basketball team had four players score in double-figures as the Tigers defeated visiting Daemen College by the score of 68-59 in a non-conference contest on Saturday afternoon in the Campus Center Gymnasium.

Holy Family improves to 2-1 overall, while Daemen suffers its first loss of the season to drop to 2-1 .

Junior Derrick Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) led the Tigers with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field, while junior Isaiah Gans (Philadelphia, Pa./Redemption Christian Academy) and redshirt junior Reggie Charles (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) each totaled 12 points.  Gans also recorded eight rebounds and three blocks, while Charles dished out a game-high five assists.  Junior Marvin Crawford (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) also scored in double-figures as he finished with ten points and one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards.  Crawford also had three assists, two blocks and a steal.

Junior Turhan Griffin (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Learning Center) added nine points (2-4 FG/4-6FT) and filled the stat sheet with four rebounds and four assists.

For Daemen, senior Gerald Beverly recorded a double-double with a game-high 18 points and 11 rebounds.  He also blocked three shots.  Fellow classmate Jordan Greene finished with 15 points and eight rebounds, while junior Supreme Hannah contributed nine points and four boards.

After a back-and-forth first half where the Tigers led only 30-24 at halftime, Holy Family opened the second half increasing its lead to double-digits for the first time.  Griffin scored a fast-break layup to give the Tigers a 36-26 lead early on in the half.

Holy Family went on to lead by as many as 14 points after a three-point play by Charles made the score 53-39.  Charles converted the free throw after scoring a lay up at the 10:36 mark of the half.

Daemen followed with a 9-0 run to come within five points of the Tigers' lead after Greene split a pair of free throws cut the lead to 53-48 with 7:40 to play in the half.

However, that would be as close as the Wildcats would get as the Tigers quickly responded scoring six straight points to increase the lead back to double-digits (59-48) with under five minutes to play.

The Wildcats cut the score down to five points one more time after a three-pointer by Hannah made the score 60-55 at the 1:54 mark.  Once again, the Tigers responded and halted the potential comeback by Daemen.

The Holy Family defense blocked a season-high eight shots and the Tigers' bench outscored Daemen's bench, 20-5.

Holy Family is back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 25 as the Tigers open Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action at Georgian Court University.  Game time is slated for 8 p.m. in Lakewood, N.J.
