Tigers Defeat Bentley in Final Seconds, 68-67




Waltham, Mass. - Redshirt junior Reggie Charles (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) scored the game-winning basket with two seconds remaining as the Holy Family University men's basketball team defeated Bentley University by the score of 68-67 on Saturday night during the final day of the Bentley Tip-Off Classic at the Dana Center.
 
Holy Family improves to 1-1 overall to start the new season, while Bentley is now 1-1 overall.
 
The Tigers trailed by as many as 11 points midway through the second half after a three-pointer by senior Andrew Shaw gave Bentley a 54-43 advantage.  However, the Tigers responded and used 14-2 to take their first lead of the game since the 2:56 mark of the first half.  Junior Turhan Griffin (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Learning Center) drained a three-pointer to give the Tigers a 57-56 lead at the 4:14 mark of the half.
 
Bentley followed with an 8-0 run to take a 64-57 advantage with 1:14 left in regulation. Holy Family once again responded and thanks to three three-pointers over the next minute regained the lead.  Junior Hunter Wysocki (Howell, N.J./Colts Neck) knocked down his fourth three-pointer of the game to give the Tigers a 66-65 lead with :17 seconds remaining.  Wysocki finished with 14 points off the bench after shooting 5-of-10 from the field, including 4-of-7 from deep range.
 
Bentley grabbed the lead back after a jumper by senior Keegan Hyland made the score 67-66 with only five seconds remaining in regulation.  On the ensuing Holy Family possession, Charles scored a fast break layup to give the Tigers the lead once again at 68-67.  Charles totaled 13 points for the game and finished with three steals on defense.
 
With only two seconds remaining in the half, junior Marvin Crawford (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) forced a turnover as time expired to seal the victory for the Tigers.  Crawford led the team with 16 points to go along with five rebounds.  He shot 6-of-13 from the field and was 4-of-7 from three-point range.
 
As a team, Holy Family drained 13 three-pointers and forced 20 turnovers through out the game.
 
Also for the Tigers, junior Derrick Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) recorded nine points and eight rebounds, while fellow classmate Isaiah Gans (Philadelphia, Pa./Redemption Christian Academy) contributed eight points and nine rebounds. 
 
For Bentley, Hyland scored a game-high 31 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field.  He was also 3-of-6 from three-point range and nearly perfect from the free throw line (8-9).  Hyland also grabbed ten rebounds to record a double-double. Shaw finished with 11 points and nine rebounds, while junior Tyler McFarland added 12 points, six rebounds and five assists.
 
Holy Family is back in action on Saturday, Nov. 22 as the Tigers host Daemen College in the team's home opener.  Game time is slated for 4 p.m. at the Campus Center Gymnasium.
