Tigers Power Past Nyack, 3-1




Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University women's volleyball defeated visiting Nyack College by the score of 3-1 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on Saturday afternoon at the Campus Center Gymnasium. 
 
Holy Family improves to 7-10 overall and 5-2 in the CACC, while Nyack falls to 0-20 overall and 0-8 in conference action.
 
Less than 24 hours after the team's setback at Wilmington, the Tigers came out firing offensively against the Warriors.  Holy Family jumped out to a 9-1 lead in the first set and went on to win comfortably by the score of 25-13.  The Tigers recorded an attack percentage of .346 in the set and committed only two attack errors in 26 attempts.  Junior Emma Herring (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) recorded back-to-back service aces to end the set as she led the match with four aces.  As a team, the Tigers finished with 12 aces.
 
In the second set, Nyack won a back-and-fourth set that saw neither team gain an advantage greater than four points when Holy Family led 7-3.  Errors plagued the Tigers on the attack in the second set as Nyack received 10 points via Holy Family miscues.  With the set tied 24-24, Nyack finished with back-to-back points to tie the match at 1-1.  Sophomore Paige Burrell recorded a service ace to close out the set.
 
In the third set, Holy Family bounced back to rallied towards the end to take the set by the score of 25-23.  Holy Family once again led early in the set, but Nyack continued to put the pressure on the Tigers tying the set 18-18 after trailing by seven points (18-11).  Holy Family went on to score the final three points to take a 2-1 lead in the match (25-23).
 
Holy Family clinched the match with a 25-16 victory in the fourth set.  The Tigers didn't allow any breathing room for the Warriors as they led by as many as eight points late in the set.  A service ace by freshman Cecilia Weir (Warminster, Pa./William Tennant) made the score 20-12.  The Tigers finished off the Warriors with three straight kills to record the nine-point fourth-set victory. Weir finished the match with eight digs.
 
Junior Rachel Johnson (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way West) led the Tigers with 13 kills and ten digs, while red-shirt sophomore Erin Miller (Chandler, Ariz. /Corona del sol) came away with a career-high 11 kills and two block assists on defense.
 
Herring finished with nine kills and three block assists, while freshman Melanie Ingram (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) totaled nine kills and 12 digs.  Sophomore Laura Tamas (Rhode-St-Genese, Belgium) led the team with 15 digs.  Senior Devyn Ingram (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) recorded 37 set assists to go along with ten digs and four block assists.
 
For Nyack, freshman Alexus Winters led the match with 15 kills and 21 digs.  Freshman Lindsay Miller finished with 13 kills and eight digs, while sophomore Paige Burrell totaled 20 digs.
 
Holy Family is back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 8 as the Tigers travel to face Chestnut Hill College in a CACC contest.  Match time is slated for 7 p.m.
