Tigers Battle Past USciences, 3-0

Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University women's volleyball team defeated the University of the Sciences by the score of 3-0 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on Friday night at the Campus Center Gymnasium. Holy Family won the match by the scores of 25-21, 25-23, and 25-17.

Holy Family improves to 10-11 overall and 8-2 in the CACC, while USciences falls to 1-13 overall and 0-11 in conference action.  The win pushes the Tigers into sole possession of first place in the CACC South Division.  Holy Family leads Georgian Court University (8-3) by one game in the loss column and Wilmington University (7-3) by one game in the win column.

In the first set, both teams battled back and forth with neither team commanding a lead greater than three points when USciences led 17-14.  Holy Family came through towards the end scoring the final four points after the set was tied at 21-21.  Junior Emma Herring (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) recorded back-to-back kills and was followed with a kill by senior Devyn Ingram (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion).  The clinching point was off an attack error by the Devils.

In the second set the Tigers led by as many as six points after taking a 19-13 lead.  However, the Devils rallied and eventually tied the set 20-20 off a service ace by junior Nicole Rivera.  Holy Family bounced back and scored the final three points to take the set, 25-23.  Sophomore Laura Tamas (Rhode-St-Genese, Belgium) scored the final point off a service ace.

In the final set, the Tigers gave themselves a lot more breathing room as they led by as many as 10 points.  Holy Family led 20-10 after junior Rachel Johnson (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way West) came through with a kill.  The Devils would come within six points of the Tigers lead at 20-14 but that would be as close as they got before the Tigers went on to close out the match scoring three of the final four points.

Johnson led the Tigers with 10 kills on the attack as she has registered double-digit kills in eight straight matches.  Sophomore Katelyn Scherber (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) finished with eight kills and two block assists, while freshman Melanie Ingram (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) tallied seven kills and 13 digs.  M. Ingram also had two total blocks (1BS/1BA).

Senior Devyn Ingram (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) paced the offense with 26 set assists to go along with ten digs and a solo block on defense.  Redshirt sophomore Erin Miller (Chandler, Ariz. /Corona del sol) led the team with four total blocks on defense, including three block assists.  Sophomore Laura Tamas (Rhode-St-Genese, Belgium) had a match-high 19 digs.

For USciences, senior Amanda DeAngleo and junior Desirae Lair led the attack with 11 kills each.  Senior Kaileen Bevenour finished with a match-high 29 set assists to go along with eight digs.  Sophomore Christine Irrera totaled a team-high 16 digs on defense.
