Tigers Hold Off Chestnut Hill, 5-2

BOX SCORE

Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University women's soccer team scored two goals in the first six minutes of action as the Tigers went on to defeat visiting Chestnut Hill College by the score of 5-2 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on Wednesday afternoon.

Holy Family improves to 7-5-3 overall and 5-1-3 in conference play, while Chestnut Hill is now 4-10-1 overall and 4-5-1 in the CACC.  With the win, Holy Family jumped up a spot in the CACC standings to second place over Dominican College who finished in a 1-1 draw with Felician College today.  The Tigers currently have 21 points, while the Chargers have 20 points. Both teams will face one another on Saturday in Orangeburg, N.Y.

It took Holy Family less than four minutes to break in the scoring after freshman Ashley Shackleford (Burlington, N.J./Holy Cross HS) connected on her fifth score of the season.  Shackleford received a cross pass from freshman Ursula Coyle (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower) to set up the score.

Two minutes later Holy Family doubled its lead when the Tigers converted on a corner kick attempt.  Junior Kimber Kisselback (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) attempted the kick and found junior Madison Hudson (Oakville, Ontario - Canada/Oakville Trafalgar) inside the box with her kick.  Hudson then headed the ball towards sophomore Jenna Richards (Croydon, Pa./Conwell Egan) who was waiting with a free opening towards the net for her fifth score of the season.

The score remained 2-0 in favor of the Tigers through the rest of the first half and into halftime.  The Holy Family defense limited Chestnut Hill to only one shot the entire half.

Holy Family wasted no time in the second half to continue its scoring spree.  Freshman Brittany Robinson (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) scored her first of two goals of the half :20 seconds in after receiving an assist from freshman Bianca Richardson (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Twp.).  The helper marked the first career point for Richardson as Holy Family led 3-0.

It was until the 62nd minute that Chestnut Hill break through and score its first goal of the game.  Senior Carly DiGiovanni attempted a shot from the right corner that found its way past Holy Family freshman goalkeeper Sienna Smith (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Regional) to make the score 3-1.

Chestnut Hill struck again in the 83rd minute when senior Marykate McShane attempted a shot from about 20-yards out as she found the upper-left part of the net to cut the Holy Family lead to 3-2.

Despite the potential comeback attempt by the Griffins, the Tigers quickly recovered and scored back-to-back goals in the final three-plus minutes to secure the victory.

Sophomore Lisa Abramski (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) scored her fourth goal of the season after collecting a loose ball inside the box.  Abramski shot towards the left side finding the back of the net in the 88th minute.

Less than a minute later, Robinson capped the scoring with her second goal of the half.  Robinson received a pass from junior Jordan Harwood (Arkport, N.Y./Arkport Central) after the Tigers regained possession.  The assist was Harwood's first career point.

Smith made two saves in net for the Tigers after facing only nine shots the entire game.  Her counterpart, junior Samantha Pauls, recorded five saves for the Griffins after 19 shot attempts by Holy Family.

As mentioned, Holy Family is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 26 as the Tigers travel to face Dominican College in a key CACC contest.  Game time is slated for 12 p.m.  A victory over the Chargers will secure a home game for the Tigers in the quarterfinals of the CACC Tournament next month.
