Bloomfield Hits Buzzer-Beater as Men's Basketball Falls, 66-64

Bloomfield, N.J. - Freshman Marvin Williams scored the game-winning shot as time expired to lift top-seeded Bloomfield College past the fourth-seeded Holy Family University men's basketball team in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) quarterfinal contest by the score of 66-64 Saturday night at the Bloomfield Gym.

Holy Family concludes the season with a 12-14 record, while Bloomfield improves to 22-7 overall and advances to the CACC semifinals.

Holy Family had four players score in double-digits as junior Khiry Hankins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day School) led the way with a team-high 18 points.  Hankins also grabbed five boards and dished out three assists.  Junior Angel Ayala (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) and freshman Eric Fleming (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) each scored 12 points for the Tigers.  Ayala also had a team-best eight rebounds.

Senior Rickie Crews (Deptford, N.J./Deptford) scored 11 points to go along with six rebounds, two assists and one block.  Crews, the nation's leading shot blocker, concludes the season with 100 blocks.  He becomes just the second player in program history to reach the century mark in blocked shots in a season.  Crews finishes his career second all-time in program history with 158 blocks.

For Bloomfield, Marvin Williams scored a game-high 25 points after shooting 10-of-19 from the field.  He also grabbed five rebounds and drained two three-pointers.  Senior Matt Wafula scored 13 points and grabbed eight boards, while sophomore Mike Williams added ten points off the bench for the Deacons.

Holy Family opened the game on a 22-7 run and would lead by as many as 16 points after Munoz converted a three-point play.  He scored a layup and converted a free throw to give the Tigers a 25-9 lead at the 9:05 mark of the half.

However, over the next four-plus minutes, Bloomfield used an 11-2 surge to come within seven points of the Tigers lead.  Marvin Williams drained a three-pointer to make the score 27-20 with 5:19 to play until halftime.

Williams would come up big again for the home team as he scored a layup as time expired at the half as Bloomfield cut the Tigers' lead to six points at halftime by the score of 37-31.

In the second half, Bloomfield opened the half on a 9-1 run to take its first lead of the game after Marvin Williams converted a pair of free throws to cap the Deacons run.  The two free throws made the score 40-38.

As the half progressed Bloomfield mounted a ten-point lead on two separate occasions late.  The Deacons led by the score of 62-52 after Wafula scored a jumper at the 4:48 mark.

This time it would be Holy Family that would overcome a double-digit deficit.  Trailing by ten points with less than five minutes to play, the Tigers used a 12-2 run to tie the game at 64-64.  Hankins scored a layup with :40 seconds remaining on the clock and was fouled in the process.  He would go ahead and convert the free throw, which tied the game at 64-64.

On the following possession, Bloomfield let the clock run down to about seven seconds before Marvin Williams attempted a shot.  His shot though was blocked by Munoz and sent out of bounds.  On the ensuing inbounds, Wafula missed a layup and Crews grabbed the defensive board with less than seven seconds to play.

However, a turnover by the Tigers gave the ball back to Bloomfield and Marvin Williams came through with the game-winner as time expired to give the Deacons a two-point victory.
