PHILADELPHIA – The HFU men's basketball team closed out its season with a second consecutive upset of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) South Division leader, defeating Jefferson 71-69 on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers found themselves trailing for the first time, 68-69, after two Rams free throws capped six straight points with 40 seconds left, but
Omarion Jett (Montclair, N.J./Saint Benedict's Prep) responded with a layup 13 seconds later for what turned out to be the game-winner.
Holy Family then got consecutive stops, on steals by
CJ Mundell (Somerdale, N.J./Sterling) and
Vernon Johnson (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck), with a Mundell free throw in-between, to seal the victory.
Individual Highlights
- Johnson led HFU with 20 points, one shy of a career-best, on 8-of-13 field goals and 4-of-7 3-pointers in his final career game
- Jett and Najee Coursey (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Cedar Creek) added 14 points apiece, with Jett topping the Tigers with five rebounds and Coursey making 6-of-8 field goals
- Mundell was also in double-figures with 11 points, to go along with a game-high four steals
- Ryan Holmes (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter School) led all players with four assists in his final career game

How it Happened
- Back-to-back 3-pointers by Josiah King (Irvington, N.J./Linden) and Johnson, the latter coming with eight minutes showing, put HFU ahead 24-15 with an even eight minutes remaining in the first half
- Jefferson got as close as one, 27-26, in the final five minutes, but Johnson would respond with five straight points
- Johnson then poured in five in a row once again in the final minute, including beating the buzzer for a 40-32 cushion at the break
- The Tigers began the second with the first 10 points, the first seven of which were by Johnson to cap 12 unanswered by him, to establish a game-high18-point advantage with 17:24 to play
- The Rams pulled within one again, 62-61, on a layup with 5:42 showing, but a Coursey layup and two Jett foul shots re-established a five-point lead with 3:39 on the clock
- After two Jefferson free throws, Mundell made a layup for another five-point cushion entering the final two minutes
