Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University men's basketball team will make its return to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 25 as the Tigers travel to face top-seeded Bloomfield College in a quarterfinal matchup. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
Holy Family, seeded fourth in the South Division, is making its first appearance in the postseason since the 2008-09 season. The Tigers finished the regular season with a 12-13 overall record and an 8-9 mark in conference play. The 12 wins mark the most victories for the Tigers since the 2007-08 season when the Tigers won 21 games.
Both teams squared off during the regular season back on Jan. 28 at the Bloomfield Gym. The Deacons came away with an 81-69 victory over the Tigers. Sophomore
Alberto Munoz (Morrisville, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) led Holy Family with 20 points and eight rebounds in the game, while senior Matt Wafula tallied a game-high 34 points to lead Bloomfield. Holy Family is 21-16 against Bloomfield all-time, but sports a 6-12 mark at the Bloomfield Gym.
This season, junior
Khiry Hankins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day School) has compiled a career year to lead the Tigers offensively. Hankins is averaging 16.8 points per game, which ranks him seventh in the CACC. The 6-2 guard currently leads the conference with 79 three-pointers this season and is also ranked among the nation's leaders in made three-pointers.
Also receiving national recognition this season is senior
Rickie Crews (Deptford, N.J./Deptford) who continues to lead the nation in blocked shots with 99. Crews ranks second all-time in program history with 157 career blocks. The 6-9 center has at least two blocks in each game played this season as he is averaging a Division II best 3.9 blocks per game. Crews is also averaging 12.0 points and 6.9 rebounds per contest to go along with a .476 shooting percentage.
After an impressive freshman season last year, sophomore
Alberto Munoz (Morrisville, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) has supplied the Tigers with a deep threat from beyond the arc this season. Munoz is averaging a career-best 15.2 points per game and has knocked down 57 three-pointers this season; two off his career-high. He's shooting 39.3-percent from deep range, which is eighth best in the conference. Munoz is also averaging 7.9 rebounds per game and has 40 steals on the defensive side of the ball.
Junior
Angel Ayala (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) has filled the stat sheet all season in his first year with the Tigers. Ayala is averaging 9.7 points, 7.6 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. He is also shooting 48.1-percent from the field. Freshman
Eric Fleming (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) is averaging 6.5 points per game and has knocked down 34 three-pointers in his first year of collegiate action.
Bloomfield, the defending CACC Champions, finished the regular season with a 21-7 overall record and 15-3 in the CACC to clinch the top seed in the North Division. In the process, the Deacons claimed their fourth consecutive North Division Regular Season Title. Wafula leads the team in scoring this season as he is averaging 16.1 points per game to go along with 6.2 rebounds per contest. Sophomore Terry Hicks is scoring 13.9 points per game, while senior Ahmad Harris is contributing 10.4 points per contest.
The winner of this match up will advance to the CACC Semifinals and face the winner of the Post University/Philadelphia University quarterfinal contest. The semifinals are set to begin on Friday, March 2 and will be hosted by Caldwell College.
