Men’s Basketball Falls to Bloomfield, 81-69

Bloomfield, N.J. - The Holy Family University men's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end with an 81-69 setback to Bloomfield College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) road contest Saturday afternoon at the Bloomfield Gym.

Holy Family is now 10-9 overall and 6-5 in conference play, while Bloomfield improves to 16-6 overall and 10-2 in the CACC.

Holy Family had three players score in double-figures, including sophomore Alberto Munoz (Morrisville, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) who led the team with 20 points.  Munoz also grabbed a team-best eight rebounds and was 7-of-8 from the free throw line.  Junior Khiry Hankins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day School) finished with 15 points and three assists, while freshman Eric Fleming (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) contributed ten points and four rebounds.

Senior Rickie Crews (Deptford, N.J./Deptford) finished the game with eight points to go along with six rebounds.  He also blocked two shots to increase his season total to 74, which is the most in Division II.  Senior Sam Mushman (Hackettstown, N.J./Pope John XXIII) and junior Angel Ayala (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) each scored eight points as well.  Mushman had a perfect day shooting as he finished 3-of-3 from the field and 2-of-2 from beyond the arc.

For Bloomfield, senior Matt Wafula scored a game-high 34 points to lead the Deacons' offense.  Wafula shot 12-of-23 from the field and was 10-of-12 from the free throw line.  She also grabbed eight rebounds and recorded a pair of steals.  Sophomore Steve Henderson contributed 17 points off the bench, while fellow classmate Kevin Udo came up one point shy of a double-double.  Udo scored nine points and had a game-high 11 rebounds.

Both teams battled back-and-forth throughout the first half that saw six different lead changes as well as the score being tied six times.  Holy Family trailed by as many as seven points in the first half tied the game at 38-38 in the final five seconds after Munoz connected on a jump shot.

In the second half, Bloomfield opened the half with a 19-7 run to take its biggest lead of the game at that point by the score of 57-45 with 13:27 left to play.

Holy Family cut the deficit to five later in the half after Fleming scored a layup to make the score 58-53 with 9:43 left on the clock.  The Tigers used an 8-1 run to rally back.

However, Bloomfield would eventually increase its lead back to double-digits after a three-pointer by Henderson to give the Deacons a 70-60 lead with 5:48 remaining in regulation.

Bloomfield led by as many as 13 points (79-66) with less than four minutes to play.  The Deacons' defense would limit Holy Family to only three shots (1-3) the final four minutes of action.  Both teams combined for 1-of-8 shooting from the field during that span.

Holy Family is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 4 as the Tigers host Caldwell College in a CACC contest.  Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
