Men’s Basketball Begins Season on Winning Note; Defeats Clarion, 88-65

Sophomore Alberto Munoz scored a game-high 25 points after shooting a perfect 10-of-10 from the field, including 5-of-5 from deep range against Clarion.

Clarion, Pa. - The Holy Family University men's basketball team shot an impressive 62-percent from the field as four players scored in double-figures as the Tigers defeated Clarion University, 88-65, in a non-conference contest Tuesday night at Tippin Gym.
 
With the win, Holy Family begins the 2011-12 campaign at 1-0 and gives first-year head coach R.C. Kehoe his first career victory.   Clarion drops to 1-2 on the young season.
 
Sophomore Alberto Munoz (Morrisville, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) led the Holy Family offense as he shot a perfect 10-of-10 from the field, including 5-of-5 from deep range to finish with a game-high 25 points.  Munoz scored 13 points in the first half as the Tigers mounted its lead to as many as 18 in the half.
 
Holy Family went on a 22-9 run to pull away from Clarion with sophomore Rashaad Sneed (Durham, N.C./Hillside Heat Academy) jumpstarting the rally with a jumper at the 9:45 mark of the first half.  Sneed finished with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting.  He also dished out a team-high six assists.
 
The Tigers capped their 18-point lead with 2:47 remaining in the half after a score by junior Khiry Hankins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day School) to make the score 42-24.  Hankins scored 11 points in the first half and finished the game with 19.  Hankins drained five three-pointers (5-10) and dished out three assists. 
 
Clarion managed to cut the Holy Family lead to 13 by the time the first half ended making the score 47-34 at halftime.
 
In the second half, Holy Family continued its hot shooting as the Tigers maintained their double-digit lead the rest of the way.  The lead reached twenty points after senior Rickie Crews (Deptford, N.J./Deptford) knocked down a three-pointer with 5:13 left in regulation to make the score 77-57.  Crews was among the quartet of Holy Family scorers to reach double-digits as he finished with 11 points and six rebounds.
 
Holy Family recorded its biggest lead of the game with less than two minutes to play when sophomore Ben Savidge (Reading, Pa./Exeter) scored a layup to make the score 88-63. 
 
Holy Family knocked down 12 three-pointers for the game and shot 63.2-percent from long range.  The Tigers defense forced 18 turnovers and held Clarion to 36.6-percent shooting from the field.
 
Junior Angel Ayala (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) recorded eight points and three assists off the bench for the Tigers.  Ayala shot 4-of-7 from the field and also grabbed three boards. 
 
For Clarion, senior Paul McQueen led the team with 25 points after shooting 11-of-18 from the field.  He also grabbed seven rebounds.  Freshman Winfield Willis contributed 14 points, while junior Calvin Edwards added 11 points.  Senior Quintus “Bud” Teer grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.
 
Holy Family is back in action on Friday, Nov. 18 as the Tigers travel to face Merrimack College in a non-conference contest.  Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
