Women’s Basketball Defeats Assumption in First Round of NCAA Tournament for Second Straight Year

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – For the second year in a row, the HFU Women's Basketball Team defeated Assumption in the first round of the NCAA Tournament as it never trailed in a 58-38 victory over the Greyhounds on Friday evening at Southern Connecticut State.

The Tigers will take on the top seed and host, SCSU, in the second round on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
 
Individual Highlights
  • Claire Dougherty (Lehman, Pa./Lake-Lehman) led all players with 17 points and 10 rebounds for her second collegiate double-double 
  • Taylor Hinkle (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) added 15 points, eight boards and game-highs of four assists and four steals
  • Kaelah Carter (Watervliet, N.Y./Shaker (The College of Saint Rose)), Lola Ibarrondo (Bristol, Pa./Neshaminy) and Lauren Palangio (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) all scored six points

How it Happened
  • The game was tied for just 43 seconds as a Carter 3-pointer 2:07 into the action put the Tigers on top for good
  • Amy Ngo (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) closed out the first quarter scoring with a layup to establish a multiple-possession lead for good, 12-8, before three straight baskets from Dougherty 2:33 into the second built the first double-digit cushion, 23-11
  • Assumption made a push with the next seven points, and the Greyhounds also got as close as five, 20-25, 2:57 ahead of the break, but HFU would close the half with eight unanswered as a Hinkle layup established a 33-20 cushion entering the locker room
  • Hinkle then began the third with a three-point play, and the Tigers held AU scoreless for opening 3:59, as a Dougherty layup capped 13 unanswered for a 38-20 edge with 6:20 left in the period
