Wilmington Wins Final Two Sets to Defeat Volleyball in Five Sets

PHILADELPHIA – The Holy Family University volleyball team won two of the first three sets and was ahead 11-10 in the fifth, only to have Wilmington end the match with the final five points in a 2-3 final (20-25, 25-16, 25-23, 15-25, 11-15) on Tuesday night. 
 
The Tigers had taken the lead with six straight points, highlighted by back-to-back aces by Mia Wise (Genoa, Ill./Genoa-Kingston)
 
The Wildcats had two aces of their own in the match-ending run though, before sealing the victory on a block. 
 
Individual Highlights
  • Wise led all players with 48 assists and added team-highs of 12 digs and three aces for her fourth double-double of the season
  • Shelby Kinzer (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington) also had 12 digs, to go along with 13 kills to move into 10th in program history with 804 for her career
  • Mackenzie Layton (Clarksboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional) topped HFU with 16 kills, while falling one dig shy of her first collegiate double-double with a new season-best of nine
  • Ava Kidd (Walton, Ky./Larry A. Ryle (Saint Anselm)) and Kalia Espenlaub (New Market, Md./Saint John's Catholic Prep (Millersville)) made it four Tigers in double-figures with 10 kills apiece
  • Leah Logan (Bloomfield, N.J./Abundant Life Academy) led the Tigers with three blocks

  • Wilmington more than doubled up Holy Family in blocks, 5-11, while outhitting the Tigers .182-.256
 
How it Happened
  • Tied at one set apiece, HFU trailed by as many as five, 8-13, in the third before eventually closing on a 12-6 surge that featured two kills from both Kidd and Espenlaub
  • The Wildcats never trailed in the fourth though, and a 1-6 run would set up the 5-10 advantage in the fifth
