PHILADELPHIA – Twice the HFU baseball team cut deficits of at least seven to at least three, but the Tigers could not complete comebacks in respective 10-13 and 10-12 losses to Bloomsburg on Sunday at Father Judge High School.
Holy Family trailed 5-12 in game two and after a five-run fifth had the tying run on second in the sixth inning, and then at the plate in the seventh, to no avail.
Individual Highlights
- Jephson Hadson-Taylor (Cheltenham, Pa./La Salle College (University of Maine)) reached base at least three times in both games, finishing the doubleheader 3-for-5 five with three walks, a hit-by-pitch, three runs, three stolen bases and a triple
- Andy Rivera (Silver Spring, Md./Woodrow Wilson (Montgomery College)) went 4-for-5 with a home run, double, six RBI, two runs and a stolen base in the nightcap
- Zach Lane (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle (McCook CC)) threw three innings of scoreless relief in game two, surrendering just one hit while striking out four, to allow the Tigers the chance to comeback
- Luke Shahin (Ajax, Ontario/Archbishop Denis O'Connor(Augusta University)) was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run in the opener, while Brian Comer (Charlotte, N.C./Independence (Bucks County CC)) was 2-for-4 with a hit-by-pitch, two runs and a stolen base in the nightcap
- Jalen David (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) stole seven bases on the day
- Alejandro Gonzalez (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech) made his collegiate debut in the game one, throwing a scoreless inning of relief
How it Happened
Game One
- HFU jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Hadson-Taylor's leadoff triple led to a two-run second that was capped by a Shahin RBI single, but Bloomsburg would break the game open with all 13 runs scoring in the fourth through six, and the Tigers could never get the potential tying run to the plate despite a six-run sixth
Game Two
- HFU erased a Huskies first inning run with a two-run bottom-half as Comer led off with a single and Rivera followed with a double, before Logan Mote's (Branchburg, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's School (Lackawanna College)) RBI fielder's choice made it 2-1
- The Tigers then added another in the third after David walked, stole two bases and came in on a pickoff to first base
- The Huskies got within one in the third before combining for 10 runs in the fourth and fifth
- Rivera's three-run home run highlighted the five-run sixth, which also featured a Gino Serechia (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton (Shepherd University)) two-run single
- Stefan Leo's (Golden, Colo./Golden Senior (Porterville CC)) leadoff walk and Comer's hit-by-pitch and stolen base gave HFU the tying run on second base in the sixth, while Hadson-Taylor led off the seventh with a base on balls to bring the tying run to the plate, but the Tigers could not push a run across
