PHILADELPHIA – The Holy Family University Men's Basketball completed a 2-0 opening weekend with a second straight double-digit victory, 86-75 over AIC, on Saturday afternoon at Jefferson.
Individual Highlights
- Di'Andre Howell-South (Paterson, N.J./Immaculate Conception (Wagner College)) led all players with 25 points on 11-of-14 shooting, including 3-of-4 3-pointers, and two steals
- Matt Gardler (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) also had two steals, to go along with 11 points and a team-high three assists
- Elijah Hernandez (Bronx, N.Y./Our Savior Lutheran (Westchester CC)) had three assists as well, while falling one point short of double-figures
- Raphael Dupouy (Bordeaux, France/Central Pointe Christian Academy (Yavapai College)) led all players in rebounding, falling one board shy of a double-double with 14 points
- Najee Coursey (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Cedar Creek (Sacred Heart University)) made it four Tigers in double-figures with 17 points on 5-of-7 field goals
Inside the Box Score
- Both teams shot over 50 percent, but HFU had 10 more shot attempts thanks to winning the rebounding (30-25) and turnover (13-16) battles
- That led to edges in both points off turnovers (19-8) and second chance points (11-4)
- The Tigers also controlled the scoring in the paint (42-28) and in the fastbreak (18-9)
How it Happened
- A Coursey jumper to make the score 7-5 less than three minutes in put Holy Family ahead for good
- AIC cut the deficit to one twice, including at 28-27 midway through the opening period
- A Dupouy three-point play sparked seven unanswered, ending with four straight Coursey points, for the game's first three-possession advantage, 39-30, on two free throws with 3:49 showing
- That was the first of three nine-point leads in the first half, the final of which came when Howell-South beat the buzzer for a 47-38 scoreline entering the locker room
- A Howell-South 3-pointer 1:28 into the second then establish edthe first double-digit cushion, 52-40
- The Yellow Jackets got as close as six twice, but a Howell-South layup for a 59-51 advantage with 15:08 left made it a three-possession lead for good
