Baseball Battles at Nationally-Ranked Molloy

PHILADELPHIA – The HFU baseball team led early in game one (3-8) before rallying tie the nightcap (3-5), but No. 16 Molloy was too tough in a doubleheader sweep of the Tigers on Saturday.

Individual Highlights
  • Garrison Pregulman (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral (Los Angelas Pierce College)) reached base twice both games, finishing 3-for-5 with two base on balls
  • Emidio Bucci (Gambrills, Md./Loyola Blakefield (York College)) was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI in the opener, while Zach Morales (Barrington, N.J./Triton Regional (PSU-Abington)) went 2-for-3 with an RBI double in the game two
  • Nathan Kuhta (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch (Ottawa University)) threw three innings of one-hit relief in the game one, surrendering just one earned run, while Denis Szychulski (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge (Bucks County CC)) registered a scoreless inning of relief in the nightcap
  • Stefan Leo (Golden, Colo./Golden Senior (Porterville CC)) hit a two-run homer and walked in the game two

How it Happened
First Game
  • Holy Family was ahead 1-0 and 2-1, as Gino Serchia's hit-by-pitch and stolen base led to Dylan Mercedes' (Washington Heights, N.Y./St. Raymonds (Mansfield University)) two-out single opening the scoring the first
  • After Molloy got on the board in the third, Bucci hit his home run with two outs in the fourth to make it 2-1
  • Making his first start as a Tiger, Brian Williams (Glenside, Pa./Roman Catholic (Bucks County CC)) held the Lions to just the one run on two hits through four
  • Molloy broke out for four in the fifth though, with a two-run homer two batters in giving it the lead for good
    • The Lions then took advantage of an error to plate two unearned scores
  • Holy Family brough the tying run to the plate in the seventh following a Bucci walk and Pregulman single, but a double play would end the threat
Second Game
  • After a three-run Molloy first, a Mercedes hit-by-pitch proceeded Leo's homer as HFU quickly cut the deficit to one in the second
  • Starter Christian Culver (Croydon, Pa./Harry S. Truman (Bucks County CC)) settled in with his first of three straight scoreless frames, and the Tigers tied it up at 3-3 in the third on Morales' double
    • Nick Lombardo (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Dublin (Bucks County CC)) was hit by a pitch with one away and Jon Martinez (Camden, N.J./Timber Creek Regional (Camden CC)) then walked, as HFU could have taken the lead if not for an out at the plate on a potential sacrifice fly
  • Holy Family had runners reach scoring position in both the fourth and fifth to no avail, and Molloy finally broke through with two unearned runs in the sixth, which began with an error
