PHILADELPHIA – The Holy University men's basketball team closed regulation on a 12-0 run over the final 2:11 to force overtime, where they would prevail 85-78 over Dominican on Saturday afternoon in the Campus Center.
After
Tazir Cantey (Lindenwold, N.J./Eastern Regional) began the run with a layup,
Ethan Pires (Dover, Del./The Pennington School (Millersville University)) made a 3-pointer 27 seconds later.
Jason Shields (Scranton, Pa./Scranton (Jefferson University)) then converted an and-one with 1:02 on the clock, before a Cantey steal and layup made it 71-69 with 51 seconds to go.
Following a fourth consecutive defensive stop,
Aamir Hurst (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann Goretti) tied the game at 71 with just five seconds remaining.
After a Dominican miss at the end of regulation, Shields scored the first four points of overtime but the Chargers would come back to go ahead 77-78 with 1:59 to play.
That was the last point DU scored though as a
Jake McGonigle (Ocean City, N.J./Wildwood Catholic) steal and pass led to Shields making the game-winner with 56 seconds showing.
That was the first two of seven straight points for Shields, who led all players with a career-highs of 29 points and 13 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. He also paced HFU with a career-best five assists.
Meanwhile, the HFU defense ended the game with seven straight defensive stops, highlighted by McGonigle drawing a charge with the Tigers up 81-78 at the 32 second mark.

- Hurst and Pires were both in double-figures with 14 and 10 points, receptively, while Cantey added nine

- Holy Family did not trail in the first half, outscoring the Chargers 9-0 over the final 1:46 as Shields beat the buzzer with a 3-pointer for a 38-28 halftime cushion
- The Tigers continued to lead until a Dominican 3-pointer made the score 52-53 with 9:56 left in regulation
- The Chargers remained on top until the Hurst's tying basket despite HFU getting as close as two twice, including when two Shields foul shots cut the deficit to 60-58 with 5:43 to go
- Dominican then went on an 11-1 flurry leading up to the Tigers' regulation-ending run
