Men’s Basketballs Closes Regulation on 12-0 Run to Force Overtime; Prevails 85-78 Over Dominican

PHILADELPHIA – The Holy University men's basketball team closed regulation on a 12-0 run over the final 2:11 to force overtime, where they would prevail 85-78 over Dominican on Saturday afternoon in the Campus Center.

After Tazir Cantey (Lindenwold, N.J./Eastern Regional) began the run with a layup, Ethan Pires (Dover, Del./The Pennington School (Millersville University)) made a 3-pointer 27 seconds later. Jason Shields (Scranton, Pa./Scranton (Jefferson University)) then converted an and-one with 1:02 on the clock, before a Cantey steal and layup made it 71-69 with 51 seconds to go.

Following a fourth consecutive defensive stop, Aamir Hurst (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann Goretti) tied the game at 71 with just five seconds remaining.

After a Dominican miss at the end of regulation, Shields scored the first four points of overtime but the Chargers would come back to go ahead 77-78 with 1:59 to play.

That was the last point DU scored though as a Jake McGonigle (Ocean City, N.J./Wildwood Catholic) steal and pass led to Shields making the game-winner with 56 seconds showing.

That was the first two of seven straight points for Shields, who led all players with a career-highs of 29 points and 13 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. He also paced HFU with a career-best five assists.

Meanwhile, the HFU defense ended the game with seven straight defensive stops, highlighted by McGonigle drawing a charge with the Tigers up 81-78 at the 32 second mark.
