WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Holy Family University's men's ball team overcame an 18-33 halftime deficit with a dominant 53-23 second half in a 71-56 triumph at the University of the District of Columbia on Tuesday night.
HFU opened the second half with the first nine points as part of a 17-4 run, with
Ryan Holmes (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter School) and
Jason Shields (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) combining for 13 as the latter's 3-pointer cut the deficit to 35-37 less than four minutes out of the locker room.
Trailing 38-42,
Tairi Ketner (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) netted six straight points for the Tigers' first lead with 12:31 remaining.
The Firebirds tied it up at 44 for 22 seconds, only for Holy Family to go ahead for good on
CJ Mundell's (Somerdale, N.J./Sterling) 3-pointer with 10:34 to go.
That sparked 12 unanswered that featured points from five different Tigers, as
Vernon Johnson's (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) 3-pointer put HFU ahead by double-digits for good, 54-44, with 7:37 on the clock.
Individual Highlights
- Shields led all players with a career-best seven assists and added 14 points, while Holmes also finished in double-figures with 11 points
- Ketner recorded a team-high 16 points on 8-of-12 shooting and a game-high 10 rebounds for his second straight double-double
- Mundell was second on Holy Family with seven rebounds, to go along with seven points
- Omarion Jett (Montclair, N.J./Saint Benedict's Prep) was right behind Shields with six assists, to go along with eight points
- He also tied a game-high with of blocks with Najee Coursey (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Cedar Creek), who matched Shields and Ketner with a team-high two steals
