Late Chestnut Hill Free Throws Sink Women’s Basketball in 52-56 Loss

PHILADELPHIA – Five free throws in the final 15 seconds, the first two of which put Chestnut Hill ahead 52-53, gave the Griffins a 52-56 win over the HFU women's basketball team on Tuesday evening in the Campus Center.  
 
Individual Highlights
  • Taylor Hinkle (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) had nearly double the amount of rebounds as any other player, falling one shy of a career-best with 15
  • Lindsay Tretter (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood) tied a game-high with five assists, a new season-best
  • Ava Morrow (Morgantown, Pa./Twin Valley) and Carolyn Prevost (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) led the Tigers with 11 and 10 points, respectively
  • Carly Bolivar (Elmont, N.Y./Sewanhaka (Alliance)) and Claire Dougherty (Lehman, Pa./Lake-Lehman) added eight points apiece

How it Happened
First Quarter
  • The entire first quarter was played within two points with five ties and five lead changes, with a Morrow 3-pointer putting HFU ahead 13-12 after 10 minutes of play
Second Quarter
  • Following four more lead changes and a tie in the opening two and a half minutes of the second, the Tigers took the first multiple-possession advantage on back-to-back Bolivar buckets to make the score 21-17 2:39 into the period
  • That was part of an 11-0 surge for Holy Family, which ended with the Tigers on top a game-high 26-17 after a Jenn Kokolus (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) layup with 5:12 left in the half
  • Chestnut Hill cut the deficit to five three times, including with the final basket of the period making it 30-25 entering the locker room
Third Quarter
  • Holy Family was up as many as six, 33-27, following a Morrow 3-pointer 1:56 into the half, but the Griffins came right back with nine in a row to go back ahead entering the final four minutes of the third
  • Chestnut Hill extended its cushion to four three times in the final 2:36 of the quarter, before Dougherty beat the buzzer for a 41-43 score-line going into the fourth
Fourth Quarter
  • The Griffins tallied the only two points of the opening three and a half minutes of the final stanza, but a Kara Meredith (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Archbishop Wood) triple and Bolivar jumper put HFU back on top 46-45 with 5:29 to go
  • The contest was played within three points until the final second, as five straight Holy Family points ending with a Hinkle jumper giving the Tigers a 51-49 advantage with 3:19 left
  • Chestnut Hill tied it, but a Prevost free throw with just 2:14 to play put HFU back on top by one
  • That was the final point until the Griffins made two foul shots to make the score 52-53 with just 15 seconds on the clock
  • Holy Family's first attempt to go back ahead was blocked at the nine-second mark, and after CHC made one another free throw the Tigers could not get another shot off
