Softball Run-Rules Defending Champion Georgian Court to Force Second Game; Tigers Fall Just Short in Nightcap of CACC Tournament First Round

LAKEWOOD, N.J. – Needing to win two games to advance, the sixth-seeded HFU softball team defeated defending champion and three seed Georgian Court 10-0 in six innings of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament First Round matchup on Tuesday.

The Tigers' late rally in the nightcap fell just short though, as the Lions prevailed 2-3.

Holy Family's 17 wins are tied for its most since 2017, which was also the last time it defeated GCU.

The Tigers have now won a CACC Tournament game two years in a row.

Individual Highlights
  • Kylee Jones (Hulmeville, Pa./Neshaminy (Rider)) drove in half of HFU's run in the opener, finishing 2-for-4 with her fifth home run of the season
  • Makenna Patterson (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) threw her third shutout of the year, surrendering just four hits
    • She also threw a scoreless inning of relief in game two
  • Lauren Hagy (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) and Carlie Miller (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) had two hits in game one too, with Hagy doubling and driving in two runs and Miller driving in another
  • Madison Grubb (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway) reached three times, via a base knock and two walks, en route to scoring three runs, while Dana Moser (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan (Stockton)) scored twice
  • Sam Ciasullo (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) went 1-for-2 with a double and walk in both games, driving in two in the opener
  • Ciasullo would get the start in the nightcap and proceeded to allow just one earned on four hits in five frames
  • Alexis Letizia (Toms River, N.J./Donovan Catholic) led the offense with a 2-for-3 performance that included a double

Inside the Box Score
  • Holy Family outhit the Lions 15-9 over the course of the doubleheader, including 11-4 in game one
    • The Tigers had a 6-2 edge in extra-base hits

How it Happened
Game One
  • Back-to-back two-out doubles by Ciasullo and Hagy got HFU on the board in the first as the Tigers led throughout
Game Two
  • A two-out error allowed GCU to get on the board in the first as it led throughout
  • Letizia was left on second following a one-out double in the third, and the Lions made it 0-2 with a two-out homer in the bottom-half
  • Georgian Court then went up 0-3 via yet another unearned run in fifth
  • Holy Family made its move in the sixth, as Jones walked with one out and Ciasullo followed with a double
  • Hagy got the Tigers on the board with an RBI groundout, before Miller cut the deficit to one with an RBI single
  • Patterson and the defense kept it 2-3 in the bottom-half, stranding runners on second and third with zero outs thanks in large part to Patterson throwing out a Lion at the plate
  • She then led off the seventh with a base on balls, but HFU was unable to threaten any further
