Softball’s Three-Run First in Game Two Salvages Split with Felician

BENSALEM, Pa. – After dropping game one 3-7, the HFU softball team scored three first inning runs in the nightcap and led the entire way in a 6-3 win that salvaged a split with Felician at Bensalem High School on Wednesday.

Individual Highlights
  • Rylee Hobel (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) reached base four times in six trips to the plate, finishing with two hits in the opener before hitting her first career home run and adding a walk in game two
  • Sam Ciasullo (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) earned her first career save in the nightcap, coming in to throw 2.1 scoreless innings of relief in which she surrendered just two hits
    • Makenna Patterson (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) earned the win, going the first 4.2 frames
  • Emma Clayborne (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon), Lauren Hagy (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) and Carlie Miller (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) all had two base knocks and an RBI in game two, with Clayborne and Miller also scoring and Hagy doubling twice
    • Hagy also tripled in game one
  • Madison Grubb (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway) had her second three-hit performance of the season in the game one, while Angelina Bresnen (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell Egan) and Alexis Letizia (Toms River, N.J./Donovan Catholic) joining Hobel in recording two hits
  • Paige Tidaback (Carteret, N.J./St. Thomas Aquinas) gave up just two earned runs on three hits in 5.2 innings of relief in game one

Inside the Box Score
  • Holy Family outhit the Golden Falcons 20-18 over the course of the doubleheader, including 11-9 in game one before breaking out for a season-high five doubles in the nightcap

How it Happened
Game Two
  • Four of the first five Tigers to come to the plate in the nightcap reached base, beginning with Kylee Jones' (Hulmeville, Pa./Neshaminy (Rider)) walk and ending with doubles by Gurbb, Clayborne and Hagy, the last two of which drove in the three runs
  • Holy Family would have an answer to both of Felician's scoring frames, first countering one in the second with Hobel's homer
  • After Patterson worked a scoreless third and fourth, the Tigers made if 5-1 by way of a Grubb sacrifice fly, which plated Miller after she had led off the fourth with a single
  • The Golden Falcons pulled back within two with a two-run fifth, but Ciasullo came on to get the final out of the frame before HFU took advantage of an error to close out the scoring on a Miller two-out single in the bottom-half
  • Ciasullo worked a 1-2-3 sixth before stranding the bases loaded in the seventh to secure the victory
Game One
  • HFU responded to Felician's two-run first with a run of its own in the bottom-half, thanks to a Jones' leadoff walk and singles by Grubb and Ciasullo, but the Tigers could never come back to tie it
  • Holy Family also made it a one-run deficit after answering the Golden Falcons' two-run second with two runs in the third, as Bresnen led off with a single before back-to-back RBI hits by Hagy (triple) and Letizia (single)
    • HFU had previously missed out on an opportunity cut into the deficit when a Tiger was thrown out at the plate to end the second
  • Again Felician had an immediate response, taking advantage of a leadoff walk to eventually plate two in the fourth, and the Golden Falcons would close out the scoring in the seventh
