Women’s Lacrosse Erases 10-Goal Deficit to Shock Jefferson, 15-13

PHILADELPHIA – Trailing by 10 late in the second quarter and 3-12 at the half, the HFU women's lacrosse team outscored Jefferson 12-1 in the second half, including 7-0 in the fourth quarter, for a 15-13 triumph over its city-rival on Tuesday night at Tiger Field.

It was Holy Family's first victory over the Rams since 2015.

Individual Highlights
  • Rianna Shields (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock South) had double the amount of goal as any other player with eight to tie a career-high, and she added an assist for a second career-best nine-point performance in four matches
  • Payton Pugh (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert's) and Maura Coleman (Lower Moreland, Pa./Little Flower) tied for a match-high with three caused turnovers apiece, a career-best for the latter, with Pugh moving into fifth in the program single-season history with 20 on the year
  • Mackenzie Santucci (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional (RCBC)) and Lynn Hardy (Audubon, N.J./Camden Catholic) both netted hat tricks, with Santucci leading HFU with five draw controls and Hardy pacing the Tigers with four ground balls
    • With four draw controls, Hardy became the third student-athlete in program history to reach 200 in a career
  • Tatceyana Pulley (Edgewater Park, N.J./Burlington City) also had four ground balls, a new career-best, while Tori Wolstenholme (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert's) led HFU with two assists
  • Emma Hurley (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Moreland) made seven saves in a winning effort, including a crucial one at the 11:29 mark of the fourth quarter that allowed HFU to keep momentum
Inside the Box Score
  • Holy Family's seven free-position goals were its most since netting nine in a win at Philadelphia on April 14, 2012
  • The Tigers held advantages in both shots (35-28) and ground balls (24-19)

How it Happened
  • Jefferson netted the first seven goals over the opening 13:21 en route to leading 1-8 after 15 minutes of play
  • Trailing 1-11 just 4:47 into the second, HFU would allow the Rams to score just twice over the final 40:13 and once over the final 35:31, following a 12th goal re-establishing a 10-goal cushion at the 5:31 mark of the second
  • Holy Family began its comeback when Shields converted a woman-down opportunity 2:43 ahead of the break mark to cut the deficit to 3-12
  • The Tigers continued that momentum out of halftime with Shields scoring just 31 seconds into the third, the first of her two goals over the opening 7:56 of the second half
  • Jefferson netted one final time for a 6-13 edge with 6:26 left in the third, but Shields completed a four-goal quarter with two scores in the final 5:40 for an 8-13 score-line entering the fourth
  • The story of the final period was free-positions goals, as each of HFU's first five fourth quarter scores were via free-position attempts
    • After Hardy, Santucci, Rachael Sepcic (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville (Georgian Court/Rowan)) and Shields each converted one over the first 6:10 of the period to cut the deficit to one, it was Santucci netting her second with 5:53 to play for the first tie of the night
  • Shields then put an exclamation point on the comeback with a behind the back goal that was set up by Wolstenholme with 4:06 remaining, and she would go on to find Santucci for unneeded insurance 1:39 ahead of the final whistle

Up Next
Holy Family looks to carry the momentum from tonight into Friday's 4 p.m. match at Caldwell, which was moved up from Saturday.
