Volleyball Suffers Five-Set Heartbreak in CACC Semifinal

PHILADELPHIA – Up two sets with four match points in the third set, the HFU volleyball team suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat to Bloomfield in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament Semifinal inside of the Campus Center on Saturday afternoon. 
 
The Bears would prevail 34-32 in the marathon third, before taking the final two sets 15-25 and 9-15.  
 
Holy Family was seeking a fifth consecutive appearance in the CACC Tournament Championship Match. 
 
Individual Highlights
  • Isabella Mosquera (West Chicago, Ill./Saint Charles East) tallied season-bests with 13 kills and a match-high eight blocks
    • She ends the year with a single-season program record 80 blocks assists, while her 113 total blocks are second
  • Allyssa Hartney (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) led all players with 17 kills, becoming the seventh Tiger in program history to surpass 1,100 in a career
  • Skylar Osenkarski (Harding, Pa./Holy Redeemer) was also in double-figures with 11 kills, one shy of a season-best, while adding four blocks
    • She ends her senior season tied for sixth in program history with 194 career blocks
  • Morgan Steck (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood) led HFU with 41 a match-high assists, 15 digs and three aces for her seventh double-double of the year
  • Faith Zehnder (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood), Kyla Sayson (Sewell, N.J./Gloucester Institute of Technology) (season-high) and Shelby Kinzer (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington) each finished with 12 digs, while Mainerys Munoz (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) made it five Tigers in double-figures as she added 10
 
Inside the Box 
  • In a match that was even statistically, Bloomfield held a major edge in service aces, 11-5
  • Holy Family outhit the Bears .143-.109
 
How it Happened
First Set
  • The Tigers scored six of the first eight points, highlighted by three Osenkarski kills, en route to leading throughout in a 25-15 score-line
  • Hartney had four kills in a set-ending 8-1 run
Second Set
  • Bloomfield started strong, building a 6-12 advantage, before HFU roared back to within one with a 7-2 surge that began with back-to-back block assists by Mosquera
  • The Bears were able to recover and re-establish a 16-19 lead, only to have back-to-back Hartney kills spark five unanswered
  • Bloomfield was able to get as close as one twice, but each time HFU answered with back-to-back points, finalized by a set-ending Osenkarski kill 
Third Set
  • Holy Family led by as many as four early, 12-8, and the Tigers were still ahead 17-14 before Bloomfield scored seven in a row for a four-point advantage of their own
  • Down 18-22 as well, HFU scored six in a row, with three points from Mosquera, for the first of the four set points
  • The Bears staved off the first two, but a Mosquera kill gave the Tigers a third at 25-24
  • The two teams continued to battle, with Holy Family saving five set points of its own before an error gave the Tigers their final match point at 31-30  
  • Bloomfield would end the set on a 4-1 run though, with Mosquera killing off a sixth set point before the Bears finally sent the match to a fourth a set
Fourth Set
  • Bloomfield carried that momentum into the fourth as it scored the first three points and never trailed
  • Holy Family could only get as close as 6-7 when Osenkarski and Kinzer teamed for a block
Fifth Set
  • Bloomfield again had a quick start as it responded to HFU scoring the first point with the next five
  • The Tigers battled back to within two twice, including at 7-9 on a Zoe Krause (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) kill, but the Bears would score the next four points to take control
