Tigers Close Out 2021 With 99-66 Triumph Over Firebirds



Philadelphia, Pa. – There was no holiday layover for the Holy Family University men's basketball team as the Tigers came away with a 99-66 victory over the University of the District of Columbia in non-conference action on Thursday evening at the Campus Center Gymnasium.

How It Happened
 
* Holy Family led 11-10 at the 14:55 mark of the first half and followed with a 11-1 run to grab a double-digit lead.  The four-minute surge was capped by a pair of free throws from freshman Dom Thomas (Mullica Hill, N.J./St. Joseph Academy) which made the score 22-11. 
 
* The Tigers saw their lead swell to 21 points at the six-minute mark when freshman David Robinson, Jr. (North Wales, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) hit a jumped to make the score 39-18.  Holy Family would lead by as many as 31 points in the first half.  A three-pointer by freshman Vernon Johnson (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) gave the Tigers a 54-23 advantage with 1:23 to play until halftime.  Holy Family would go on to lead, 56-29, at the half.
 
* In the second half, the Tigers never saw their lead dip below 25 points and held a 33-point spread at the 15:45 mark of the half.  Junior Wu Macon III (Orlando, Fla./Timbercreek) scored a layup to make the score 69-36 for the team's largest lead of the game.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Five players scored in double-figures for the Tigers.  Freshman Manny Toha (Newark, N.J./Marist) led all scorers with 21 points as he shot a near-perfect 8-of-9 from the field. 
 
* Robinson finished with 18 points (8-13 FG) to go along with seven rebounds and two steals.  Kharon Randolph (Philadelphia, Pa./Haverford School) added 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting, including 2-of-2 from deep range.
 
* Johnson scored a season-high 12 points for his first double-digit scoring output of his career.  He shot 4-of-5 from the field and dished out three assists.  Macon also scored a season-high as he finished with 10 points (4-7 FG).
 
* Junior Jake McGonigle (Ocean City, N.J./Wildwood Catholic) led the game with a career-high nine assists to go along with five points. 
 
* Junior Eric Esposito (Langhorne, Pa./Conwell Egan) led the Tigers with eight rebounds while scoring seven points.
 
* As a team, Holy Family shot a season-best 58.7-percent from the field as the Tigers converted 37-of-63 shot attempts.  The Tigers also dished out a season-best 21 assists, while scoring a season-high 99 points.
 
* For the Firebirds, Kenyon Stone finished with a team-high 15 points (6-10 FG), while Hartnel Haye nearly came away with a double-double with 13 points and a game-high nine boards.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the third meeting between Holy Family and UDC since the start of the 2017-18 season.  The Tigers are now 1-2 versus the Firebirds in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 2 as the Tigers resume Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play with a road match up against Post University.  Game time is set for 3 p.m. in Waterbury, Conn.
