Tigers Win Home Opener in Double Overtime Thriller

Philadelphia, Pa. – The Holy Family University men's basketball team needed two extra frames to pick up a 73-65 victory over Queens College in a non-conference contest on Saturday, but after 633 days since the team last played a game inside the Campus Center Gymnasium, the extra time was worth the wait.

Score: Holy Family 73, Queens 65
Records: Holy Family (2-2, 0-0 CACC) | Queens (1-1, 0-0 ECC)
Location: Philadelphia, Pa. (Campus Center Gymnasium)

How It Happened

* In the first overtime period the Tigers found themselves down 61-57 after the Knights' Caudy Desmornes drained a three-pointer at the 2:44 mark.  On the following Holy Family possession, junior Kharon Randolph (Philadelphia, Pa./Haverford School) responded with a clutch three of his own to cut the deficit back down to one.  Three possessions later junior Eric Esposito (Langhorne, Pa./Conwell Egan) knocked down a go-ahead three-pointer to give the Tigers a 63-61 lead with 1:12 to play.  However, the Knights tied the game at 63-63 on their next possession to force a second overtime period.

* Queens scored the first bucket in the second overtime then from there it was all Holy Family. The Tigers would tie the game at 65-65 on a tip-in score by junior Daniel Fleming (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield).  The Tigers would then take the lead on their next possession when freshman Rick'Keem Mixson (Linden, N.J./St. Mary of the Assumption (Raritan Valley CC)) split a pair of free throws to make the score 66-65.  Holy Family then received back-to-back three-pointers by freshman Manny Toha (Newark, N.J./Marist) and Randolph on the next two Tigers' possessions to put the game out of reach.  Randolph's three made the score 71-65 with less than :30 seconds to play.  Holy Family closed the second overtime period with a 10-0 run.

* A free throw with eight seconds remaining in regulation by Toha tied the game at 54-54.  Queens had an opportunity to potentially put up a game-winning shot but freshman Vernon Johnson (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) intercepted a pass for a steal right before the final buzzer of the second half.

* Holy Family trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half with Queens holding a 17-6 lead midway through the half.  The Tigers would cut into the lead and come within five points at the end of the half after Esposito drained a three-pointer at the horn to make the score 23-18 at halftime.
