Tigers Split Home Opener With Setters

Bensalem, Pa. –  The Holy Family University softball team split its home opener with Pace University in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Bensalem High School.  The Tigers took the opener by the score of 6-2, but a late rally fell short in the night cap as the Setters came away with a 9-5 victory.

GM2 Score: Pace 9, Holy Family 5
Records: Holy Family (3-7, 0-0 CACC) | Pace (7-1, 0-0 NE10)

Game One Recap

* Holy Family wasted no time jumping out on top of Pace thanks to a three-run homer by junior Taylor Nichols (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) in the bottom of the first.

* Pace scored an unearned run in the third to make the score 3-1.  Two innings late the Tigers got that run back when freshman Madison Twaddell (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) led the inning off with a solo home run.

* Leading 4-1, the Tigers added another pair of runs for good measure in the sixth.  Sophomores Abigail Smith (Elkton, Md./Red Lion Christian Academy) and Jasmine Martinez (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Polytechnic) connected on back-to-back doubles with Smith scoring on the latter.  Martinez would later score on a Pace miscue in the field.

* Pace made things interesting in the top half of the seventh when Zoie Iverson led the inning off with a home run to center field.  The Setters would go on to load the bases but with two outs in the inning starting pitcher, sophomore Ashley Remington (Collegeville, Pa./Pope John Paul II), recorded the final out via a line drive to third base to keep the score intact.

Inside the Box Score – Game One

* Remington (2-3) went the distance for the Tigers as she picked up her second win of the season.  She finished the game with seven strikeouts and allowed just one earned run.

* Nichols drove in a season-high three runs via her first inning home run; her first of the season.

* Twaddell was the lone Tiger to record multiple hits in the game as she went 2-for-4 with two runs.  Her solo home run in the fifth marked her second of the season.

Game Two Recap

* In the second game the two teams reversed roles as the Setters were the first to strike.  Pace plated four runs in the opening inning after collecting five hits.  Iverson highlighted the inning with a two run single. The Tigers got one run back in the bottom of the inning with senior Tyler Beccari (Havertown, Pa./Haverford (Temple)) scoring on an error.

* The Tigers cut the deficit in half to 4-2 in the bottom of the third when Nichols drove in Twaddell with a double to right-center.

* Pace added a run in the fourth before plating a pair of runs in each the sixth and seventh innings.  In the sixth, Emma Carruth recorded a run scoring double and would go on to score on an Iverson base hit that made the score 7-2.  The Setters added another two runs in the seventh to increase the lead to 9-2.

* In the bottom the seventh the first four batters for the Tigers reached base, including a leadoff home run by Smith.  Twaddell drove in a run before the first out of the inning to make the score 9-4.  With two runners on sophomore Elaina Hansen (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) singled to left field to score Beccari who reached base earlier in the inning on a double.  The rally came to an end after Pace forced a double-play to end the inning and essentially the game.

Inside the Box Score – Game Two

* Beccari and Hansen each recorded three hits in the game for the Tigers.  Beccari went 3-for-3 with two runs and a walk, while Hansen finished 3-for-4 with one RBI.

* Smith's seventh inning home run marked her first of the season.

* Iverson went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored for the Setters.  Jillian Gartner went 3-for-4 with two runs, while Raechelle Seil went 3-for-4 at the plate.
