Tigers Fall to Regional Foe Chargers



Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The Holy Family University women's volleyball team suffered a 3-1 defeat versus the University of New Haven in a non-conference contest on Saturday morning at Molloy College's Quealy Gymnasium.

Match Recap
 
* Holy Family jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match after taking the first set by the score of 25-21.  The Tigers jumped out to a 7-1 advantage thanks to three service aces by freshman Skylar Osenkarski (Harding, Pa./Holy Redeemer) to help fuel the opening run.  The Tigers never trailed in the set and led by as many as nine points when a kill by freshman Allyssa Hartney (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) capped a 7-0 run that made the score 19-10. New Haven came within two points of the lead down the stretch but a Chargers error followed by an ace by sophomore Morgan Silks (Norristown, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) sealed the first set victory.
 
* The Chargers would go on to tie the match with a victory in set two after recording 12 kills and only three errors.  A pair of late runs propelled New Haven to a 25-17 victory.  The third set the Chargers were just as successful on the attack this time totaled 13 kills while committing a match-low two errors with a .355 attack percentage.  New Haven held off a late rally by the Tigers after Holy Family came within a point of the lead at 18-17.  The Chargers maintained the lead the rest of the way and finished the set at 25-20.
 
* In the fourth set the Chargers used a 6-0 run late to clinch the match.  With the Tigers leading 13-12, New Haven rolled off six unanswered points to grab an 18-13 lead.  After a point by the Tigers off a kill from junior Camille Johnson (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake), the Chargers answered with three more points to increase their lead to 21-14.  The Chargers went on to take the set, 25-18.
 
News and Notes
 
* Junior Carly Covington (Delmar, Md./Delmar) finished with a team-high 14 kills to go along with 17 digs.  Senior Gianna Pesgonelli also recorded double-digit kills as she added 10.
 
* Senior Jillian Boyle (North Andover, Mass./North Andover (Rivier College)) and sophomore Morgan Silks (Norristown, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) each totaled 20-plus digs in the match.  Boyle finished with a team-high 24, while Silks added 22 to go along with 35 assists.
 
* As a team the Tigers totaled 13 aces; one shy of their season-high.  Osenkarski led the Tigers with four aces, while Silks and freshman Maeve Boylan (Ridley Township, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) each totaled three.  Boylan also finished the match with a season-high 12 digs.
 
* New Haven's Ruby Fera led the match with 15 kills to go along with 16 assists.  Julia Ruarniere totaled a match-high 25 digs.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the sixth meeting between Holy Family and New Haven dating back to the 2009 season.  The Tigers are now 1-5 versus the Chargers in the all-time series.

Holy Family returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 24 as the Tigers travel to face Southern Connecticut State University in a non-conference contest. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
